The City's Best DIY Classes

Life's a Stitch
Self-taught sewing skills just so-so? The gals at Craft Haven in Potrero Hill offer a three-part learn-the-basics package called “The Works” that turns your butterfingers into instruments of needle-and-thread wizardry. Dates ongoing, 520 Hampshire St., crafthaven.org

Weekend Sherpa: The Best Little Secret BBQ Spot in SF

Here's a little piece of grilling heaven—right in the city. Perched on a grassy expanse nearly the size of a soccer field, Fort Miley is a geographic slice of gastronomic delight hidden behind Lands End. To reach its solo grill, make a short climb up a road through a dense forest, then emerge onto a private plateau with giant views of Ocean Beach all the way down Sloat Boulevard. This is a truly secluded playground, so bring the bocce, the burgers, and your best suds and buds. While there, explore the WWII military structures and stroll north up a little path that leads to a fresh, stellar view of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Fort Miley grill is often available for walk-ins, especially on weekdays.

Have Gun, Will Travel: 'The American'

Who is Jack, the painfully distant protagonist at the heart of Anton Corbijn’s new thriller? We suspect he might have been an assassin, and indeed, when thrust in harm’s way, he responds with pistols drawn, coldly gunning down friends and foes alike – anyone, it seems, who might compromise his work.

He is a difficult man to engage. Personal disclosures are few, and whatever concessions he offers to inquiring strangers – about his job, or his technological acumen – are often misleading. Yet he takes no joy in the deception. Jack, whose real name might be Edward, is hungry for human contact, a luxury his lifestyle doesn’t afford.

California Home+Design Talks "Steampunk"

Lately a few of us at CH&D have been hearing the word "steampunk" thrown around. What is steampunk you might ask? Steampunk—which has just been added to the Oxford English Dictionary—is a sub-genre of science fiction that takes place in a futuristic world that is still powered by steam and often evokes Victorian Era style. Confused? Think: Jules Vern, H.G Wells and Capatain Nemo meets 21st Century... almost. In terms of design it's an interesting mix of industrial chic, vintage pharamcy, brassy modern and...well, just take a look.
