5 Cravings, from Pork Buns to Kouign Amann

5 Cravings, from Pork Buns to Kouign Amann

By

Schuyler Bailey is hungry. Here are her cravings this week.

Coca-Cola braised pork bun at The Chairman

The Chairman has rightly garnered a cult following for its pillowy baos filled with all manner of goodness, from pork belly to miso-cured tofu. Of course, if you’ve never had the pleasure, you must try more than one flavor. But I’ll be going back for the steamed Coca-Cola braised pork bun, flanked by crunchy Savoy cabbage slaw made with preserved mustard seeds, and a garlicky Kewpie mayo that pulls it all together. // 670 Larkin St., hailthechairman.com

Cheese and jam at Sidekick Cafe & Milk Bar

I’m a huge fan of eating cheese as a meal, often opting for a slab of triple cream anything with crackers and calling it a day. So the cheese and jam, with fresh chèvre and seasonal jam on a challah roll, at Sidekick Cafe sounds like a perfect way to start the day. // 1 Ferry Building, #19, cowgirlcreamery.com

The Schuyler Special at Udupi Palace

Ok, this isn’t actually on the menu, but I order the same thing at Udupi Palace every. single. time. It’s a can’t-fail combination that works both in-house and fabulously for take out, too: spinach masala dosa (spiced potatoes and spinach smeared inside a crispy, paper-thin crepe), special vege curry (seasonal veggies in a choose-your-own-adventure level of spicy sauce), and channa masala (chickpeas swimming in a flavorful onion sauce). Ladle the latter two over aromatic saffron rice and slip into Indian oblivion. // 1007 Valencia St., udupipalaceca.com

Fried chicken sandwich at Plow

This is the fried chicken sandwich to end all others. How is that, you ask? I credit the jalapeno slaw, which adds requisite tang and welcome heat, and the crackle of a thin, flash-fried shell around supple chicken. It’s not always on the menu, but if it is, don’t miss it. // 1299 18th St., eatatplow.com

Seasonal kouign amann at B. Patisserie

You should need no further encouragement to head to B. Patisserie for the now famous kouign amann, but in case you do...chef Belinda Leong is adding a spoonful of gingerbread, speculoos-pear, eggnog, cranberry-orange, and chocolate peppermint for a seasonal spin. I’ll take one of each, please. // 2821 California St., b. patisserie
