7 Fun Things: A Roving, Costumed Dance Party + More Can't-Miss Events This Week

Here are some eventful goodies for the week, beyond the ample Halloween festivities.


Monday, October 30th: Meet the Minds Behind 'Girls of the Golden West' @ Commonwealth Club


When: Noon to 1:30pm

Where: 110 The Embarcadero (Embarcadero), commonwealthclub.org

Why: Start your week with an insightful discussion at the Commonwealth Club. Composer John Adams and director Peter Sellars will divulge how they pieced together their wildly popular SF Opera Girls of the Golden West. Tickets ($7-$20) can be purchased on commonwealthclub.org.


Tuesday, October 31st: Join a Roving Costumed Dance Party @ BART Plaza

When: 8:30pm to 12:30pm

Where: 16th St. and Mission St. (Mission), facebook.com

Why: Dance off the candy calories this Tuesday evening at DanceOWeek 2k17— SF's foremost ghoulish street party, regularly enticing hundreds of costumed participants to lean with it, rock with it in full-out choreography. Admission is free to the party in the plaza, but seats on the on-site party bus is on a first-come, first-served basis.


Wednesday, November 1st: See Disney Classics Performed on Ice @ Union Square Park

When: 9:30am to 10:00pm (Afterward, attendees are welcome to skate the ice)

Where: 333 Post St. (Union Square), eventbrite.com

Why: Kickstart the holiday season at the ice rink. This Wednesday afternoon, the usual $12 admission will be waived, and you can watch ice skating odes to such Disney classics like A Whole New World. Skate rentals, however, cost $6 per person, if you wish to show off your own moves after the performances have wrapped.


Thursday, November 2nd: Festival of Altars @ Garfield Square

When: 4:00pm to 10:00pm

Where: 2965 Harrison St. (Mission), dayofthedeadsf.org

Why: Peruse through the vivid alters and offerings put out by families, friends, community members at the annual Dias De Los Muertos event. Admission is free, but a donation to the on-going GoFundMe campaign is recommended to help cover miscellaneous costs, like securing necessary park permits.


Friday, November 3rd: Get Lost in the Jungle @ Classic Cars West

When: 6:00pm to 10:00pm

Where: 411 26th St. (Oakland), oaklandartmurmur.org

Why: Making its Bay Area Debut during the First Friday's Art Murmur at Classic Car West, is Between the Leaves— a multi-sensory installation of tactile jungle vibes, created by installation artist Anjelica Colliard. Admission will be free, but you can donate to the collective to help support their ongoing efforts to make art available to everyone.


Saturday, November 4th: Tip it Back for Fire Relief @ Redwood Hill Wines

When: 3:00pm to 5:00pm

Where: 824 Ellis St. (Tenderloin), eventbrite.com

Why: Cheers to the weekend at Redwood Hill Winery, courtesy of charitable tastings poured by the Detert Family Vineyards, Watkins Family Winery, and, of course, those bottled by Redwood Hill Winery themselves. A donation of $50 or more either in person on Eventbrite is requested. The funds collected during the tasting will go directly to the Redwood Credit Union Community Relief Fund.


Sunday, November 5th: Get Your Zen on @ Yoga Garden SF

When: 12:30pm to 2:00pm

Where: 286 Divisadero St. (Lower Haight), yogagardensf.com

Why: Cap off the weekend with a moment to center yourself at Yoga Garden's free beginner intro class. Admission is free, but an RSVP via their online sign-up page is recommended to secure your place; mats, too, are offered free of charge.
