I'm Your Pusher, Man

Goodie Goodie Gumdrops: a bag of chocolate toffee
from Fiona's Sweet Shoppe

I guess you could say that visions of sugarplums have been dancing in my head. Well, kind of. My head has actually been feeling detached from my body, as I’ve recently been suffering through the flu—but during the long, dreadful bout of illness I found myself craving only two things: hot cocoa and chocolate milk (I guess that’s really one thing, two forms). I like sugar. So sue me.

North Meets East

December is only half way through and like most monthly magazine editors, I’m already getting close to wrapping up our February issue. Those of you planning a trip to Tahoe will want to check out my fashion piece on cool snow gear. But for those skiing and boarding enthusiasts, who are already heading north for the holidays, stop by The North Face (180 Post St., 415-433-3223) this weekend for its limited edition NSE collection.

Peppermint Pedicure

I’m making a holiday visit to see family in New York and spoke to my six-year-old goddaughter the other day. Mary has already lined up many activities for the visit, from baking cookies to giving me a pedicure. Yes, that’s right. The six-year-old version of a pedicure involves massaging feet with lotion and polishing a topcoat of color on already-polished toes. As with any pedicure, I like the massage part the best, and I’m packing my own products for the job.

Designer Scarves: Wrapped Up in a Cause

The scarf is a staple in my wardrobe, no matter the season. I find that wrapping a vintage silk one around my neck or tying it to the handle of a handbag adds just the right touch (and sometimes makes me feel very French-chic). And, of course, a long, cashmere one adds just the right amount of warmth.

Dewey Cox Rocks The Great American Music Hall

photography by Rick Camargo

Greetings Chums,

“Everyone loves Cox.” That’s what actor John C. Reilly bellowed from the stage as he performed for one night only as the legendary Dewey Cox.

This was no ordinary rock concert, it was pants down, one of the most rip-roaringly funny and brilliant live performances I have ever witnessed.

In Hot Water

As a whole, it's just been one of those weeks. But Wednesday, the universe wouldn’t align no matter what I did. So, after work was over, I went through my usual laundry list of perk-me-ups:

• I went to the gym and did my little gym routine extra hard, while listening to The Prototypes on my iPod—really loud.
• I sat in the steam room and breathed deeply.
• When this didn't work, I drank—two stiff drinks at our office holiday party (a negroni and a gin martini, twist of lemon)—and danced (particularly to “How Do You Want It?” by Tupac, which was smartly requested by Melissa, our arts and entertainment editor).

But the universe was being stubborn that night. It wouldn't budge.
