Grinderman Brings The Dirty Blues To The Warfield
“I waaant you,” wails Nick Cave on “Kitchenette” off the latest Grinderman album, 2 (Anti-). Oprah Winfrey burning up the flatscreen, buck-toothed imbeciles are plaguing the vocalist’s existence, and Cave’s howl starts on a high note before teetering over into an even more precariously higher place and then crashing and burning with the undercutting next line. “Yeah, I want you—to be my friend.”
Virginia Madsen Spends a Night at the Sundance Kabuki Revisiting 'Sideways'
Virginia Madsen had plenty to celebrate this Thanksgiving. Last month, she was an official honoree of Hollywood’s LA Femme International Film Festival, an annual celebration of films written, directed or produced by women, for her achievements during 27 years in TV and film, and also for her recently formed production company’s maiden offering: I Know a Woman Like That, an acclaimed documentary about the lives of women 64 and older whose youthful vigor remains defiantly undiminished.
Silent but Deadly: Dwayne Johnson Tears Through a Somber Killing Spree in 'Faster'
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson became a World Wrestling Entertainment legend not because of his extraordinary physique or his technical proficiency. He made himself memorable at the mic, tearing his opponents down to size with colorful trash talk and a challenging glare, punctuated by his cocked “people’s eyebrow.”
Rapunzel Lets Down Her Bountiful Blonde Hair in Disney's Winning New Musical
Considering how many classic fairy tales Walt Disney adapted for his early animations, it’s a wonder the Mouse House founder never followed through on his desire to do the same for Rapunzel, the Brothers Grimm’s account of a fair-haired maiden trapped in a tower high above the German countryside.
Seventy years after Disney first sent the story into development, where it languished and seemingly died of neglect, comes Tangled, his empire’s 50th animated feature and, since Pixar ushered the studio into the digital age with Toy Story, one of its most rewarding.
Indie Theater Roundup: 7 Movies to See This Week
If your post-holiday plans don't involve football and a tryptophan-induced nap, make your way to Embarcadero Center, where some of this year's strongest Oscar contenders, including 127 Hours and Fair Game, are now playing. Check out the Castro's two-day celebration of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, beginning Saturday. Or update your Netflix queue to include John Hughes' classic Thanksgiving comedy Planes, Trains & Automobiles. Happy Turkey Day!

Billy Bob Thornton on 'Faster' and the Miserable State of Hollywood Today
Like the heroin-addicted cop he plays in Faster, the aggressive new thriller in which he co-stars opposite a bulked-up Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton rarely minces words. So when he volunteers an off-the-cuff assessment of American movies today, you can expect nothing less than brutal candor.
“We’re living in a time where we’re making the worst movies in history,” says Thornton, 55, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter and star of the 1997’s Sling Blade, which he directed. “They’re geared toward the video-game generation.

Ice Ice Baby: Get Your Skate On!
Time to show off that double lutz—the city’s skating rinks are up and running.
Embarcadero Center
After 20-plus years as the city’s largest outdoor rink—and our personal favorite, given its amazing views—the Holiday Ice Rink at Embarcadero Center is a wintertime ritual for many San Franciscans. It opens every day at 10 a.m., closing at 10 p.m. on school nights and 11:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. As is custom, Bing Crosby will serenade your gliding (or flailing). Prefer surf and sun to ice and cold? Come weekly for “Aloha Fridays,” when the rink’s winter wonderland decor goes tropical and Hawaiian Airlines offers a chance to win airfare for two to Hawaii.
5th Annual Supermarket Street Sweep (With Beer from 21st Amendment)
It's that time of year again—time to but out your panniers or giant bags and pedal around the city for the SF Food Bank. Now in its fifth year, the Supermarket Street Sweep sends riders all over San Francisco to shop for groceries that will go to help the Food Bank feed needy families this holiday season. The totals have risen steadily every year, with last year's riders bringing in a whopping 7,507 lbs of food.
