The Morimoto Touch: The Knife-Wielding Iron Chef Turns Napa on Its Head

From the envelope-pushing vegetarian Ubuntu to Neela’s, the Indian restaurant opened by Neela Paniz, the town of Napa is bound and determined to become a dining destination like Yountville. But unlike its popular sibling, Napa is bucking wine country’s typical Eurocentric point of view—most impactfully by the opening of the trendy Japanese-influenced Morimoto Napa. Although Food Network celeb chef Masaharu Morimoto has five other restaurants to attend to, you might spot the 55-year-old at this insta-scene attending to the kitchen in a chef’s coat, homeboy-style shorts, and white sneakers. Surrounded by diners downing sake and pricey sushi, you could easily be somewhere far away, like Honolulu—which is exactly where his next restaurant is headed this fall.

Olive Kitteridge at Word for Word

Whenever people ask for theater recommendations, I always point them toward Word for Word. If you’re not a literary buff, it’s excellent theater. If you were an English major or consistently check out eight books at a time from the public library, you’ll be blasted into geek heaven. Word for Word brings literature to life, complete with all the he-saids, she-saids of the original.

¡Viva Muralismo! Gala & Art Auction This Saturday to Benefit Precita Eyes

Precita Eyes, aside from adorning city buildings with gorgeous, eye-popping murals, is one of the most precious assets we have in preserving the Mission's dynamic cultural heritage, so celebrate their 2010 Muralists Gala Benefit and Art Auction, called ¡Viva Muralismo! this Saturday, September 25 at SOMArts Cultural Center. Schmooze with artists and politicians (Nancy Pelosi! Mark Leno!) while dancing to DJ Special K's beats and sipping on champagne, and bid on original artwork by the night's featured creative minds.

In honor of the week, Liquor.com has rounded up signature drink recipes from some of the city's best, including Duggan McDonnell (Cantina), H. Joseph Ehrmann (Elixir) and Jeff Hollinger & Jonny Raglin (Comstock Saloon).

Go Green or Bust: SF's Vegan Fashion Show

SF is the epicenter for all things green, so it was only due time before a vegan fashion show would sprout up. Sounds quirky, but don't expect to see potato sack frocks and hemp pants strutting down the runway.

Dead Whale at Ocean Beach

Sad day.  A dead whale washed up this morning (full of shark bites) to Ocean Beach between Lawton and Kirkham streets. Photos by citystoke at stokereport.
