Dead Whale at Ocean Beach

Sad day.  A dead whale washed up this morning (full of shark bites) to Ocean Beach between Lawton and Kirkham streets. Photos by citystoke at stokereport.

Hit the (Dirt) Road: 5 Urban Running Trails

Ditch the treadmill and track for these five urban trails that wind through the great outdoors.

Lands End
Trail running doesn’t get any more majestic than this. To avoid the tourists ogling the “Steep Cliff” signs, head to the Lands End Trail in the early morning (be prepared for fog). Enter the trailhead around the Legion of Honor, and run the wide-ish path atop of the windswept coastal cliffs. The run is moderate, save for some blood-pumping staircase action. The views are definitely worth the pain. parksconservancy.org

At Prospect, Boulevard's Little Sister, Chef Ravi Kapur Strikes Gold

Despite what you may have heard, the apple does not fall far from the tree. In this case, the tree is Boulevard, and the apple is the long-awaited sequel restaurant, Prospect. Boulevard holds down the corner of Stewart and Mission streets, serving precisely executed dishes that feature local bounty to diners with a little coin to throw around. Two blocks away and nearly two decades after Boulevard’s opening, Prospect is doing the same.

Craigslist Deal of the Week: $1950 SoMa 1 Bdrm

We like to keep our apartment finds as low as possible, but sometimes looks–not to mention neighborhoods–conspire against us. Such was the case on both fronts with this weeks Craigslist Deal. It's a little bit pricier than the usual, but given the location and sharp interior (that comes fully furnished, in addition) we'd still say it's a steal.

Photos: The Associates' White Caps Night Caps 2010 Benefit

On Thursday, September 16, 2010, the Associates of Saint Francis Memorial Hospital hosted the Second Annual “White Caps and Night Caps” Charity Event to benefit the hospital’s Bothin Burn Center. The Center is the only acute care burn facility in the Bay Area – servicing North Bay, South Bay and East Bay counties - and now in need of funds more than ever as they service the severe burn victims of the San Bruno fires.

It’s not just that Leila Chirayath Janah has Sama, which means “equal,” tattooed in Sanskrit on her wrist. She also rattles off poverty statistics, curses misspent foreign aid, and recounts stories of teaching in Ghana as a teenager. It seems she was destined to start Samasource, the Mission-based company she founded at age 25.

Hot 20 2010: Aaron Koblin, Technology Lead at Google Creative Lab

Aaron Koblin, 28
Technology lead, Google Creative Lab

Aaron Koblin has a hard time explaining his job. He thinks of himself as more of an architect than an artist, someone in the business of making data beautiful and accessible. In his day-to-day, he uses crowd-sourcing to construct stunning visuals from a flood of information.

2010 Hot 20: Zumbi and AmpLive of Zion I

Take two talented musicians (one studying to be a doctor, the other a psychologist), put them together, and you have a future in medicine that was best derailed. Ten years and six albums later, AmpLive (who has remixed music from Linkin Park, MGMT, and Radiohead) and Zumbi of Oakland duo Zion I have proven unstoppable.

The two rule the underground hip-hop scene and have worked with heavy hitters such as Aesop Rock, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and Gift of Gab. They started their own record label and have amassed an audience both here and abroad. “It’s not like a huge pop-based following, but the people who feel us are really into it,” says Zumbi.
