Last-Minute Holiday Shopping: The Gift of Light

Last-Minute Holiday Shopping: The Gift of Light

By

Just in time for the holidays, the San Francisco cityscape is twinkling through the night. Set against the backdrop of the lit-up FiDi offices, The Bay Lights now shine from dusk to dawn, a welcome distraction for insomniacs with a bay view and late-night revelers.  My guess is that we'll have one busy waterfront on New Year's Eve.

The folks behind Illuminate the Arts worked hard to make this happen, and artist Leo Villareal has programmed a series of new sequences that suit the mood of the early morning hours in SF. If you're a fan of the project, you can show your support—and check one more present off your holiday shopping list—by giving the gift of light. There are five gift options across price points, from $50 to $500, and all tax deductible. Each donation level includes choosing and naming a light from the 25,000 that line the bridge cables. Here's a sneak peek:

Digital: Choose and name a light, and then download your official "Light ID" certificate ($50).

Celebration: Choose and name a light, then get a laser-cut commemorative card with the photo and message of your choice ($100).

Tote: This is no ordinary black canvas tote. This one's adorned with brushed silver nail heads and Swarovski crystals in the shape of the bridge cables. It's a collaboration between NY's Michelle Hatch and SF's very own Jay Jeffers ($295).

Pendant: It's cooler than it looks at first glance. The electronic art piece features 69 white LEDs on a circuit board programmed by the artist himself ($300)!

Ultimate Gift of Light: Designed by Aaron Silverstein and Marin Metalworks, this limited-edition, handcrafted aluminum sculpture includes a laser-cut card signed by artist Leo Villareal ($500).

By giving the gift of light, you're helping to support the project and raise the money to hopefully turn The Bay Lights into a permanent installation on the Bay Bridge. thebaylights.org
