Top Picks for the Weekend

By

With Chinese New Year celebrations in full swing and SF Beer Week beginning, the weekend is chock full of big events. But there's plenty more going on too...

Dancing

Happy 12th birthday to Ruby Skye! The über-club kicks off its weekend celebration with superstar electronica dance DJ Paul Van Dyk, who takes over the turntables tonight to promote his new album EVOLUTION (and btw, he is never one to disappoint). Dutch House DJ Chuckie spins on Saturday. Take a minute from your grooving to take in the gorgeous turn-of-the-century architecture (and it’s impossible not to notice Ruby’s super sick sound system). Paul Van Dyk, Friday Feb. 10, 9 p.m. $70. Chuckie, Saturday Feb. 11, 9p.m., $50.

Fashion

Attention ladies - over 2,000 tops, bandage skirts, cashmere, and cocktail dresses will be on display for your perusing and trying on pleasure. It's the BCBG, James Perse, and Ella Moss sample sale extravaganza, where everything will be up to 70% off (and an additional 10% off for all cash purchases). Saturday, Feb. 11, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Fort Mason Center, Building D, Fleet Room

Classical Music

Uniting traditional Chinese music with Western orchestral style, the San Francisco Symphony presents its 12th Annual Chinese New Year Concert and Celebration. Ticketholders can join the festival reception at 3 p.m. with children’s arts and crafts, lion dancing, Chinese calligraphy, and complimentary food, desserts, and tea in the Davies Symphony Hall lobbies. The concert, consisting of entirely Chinese and Chinese-American composers, begins at 4 p.m. Following the show, join an elegant Imperial Dinner at 6 p.m. in the gorgeous grand Rotunda of City Hall (ticket sold separately). Saturday, Feb. 11, Davies Symphony Hall 201 Van Ness Ave @ Grove, (415) 864-6000. Tickets $15-$68. Imperial Dinner tickets are available by calling (415) 503-5500.

Drinking

SF’s first taproom on wheels, the BrewTruc, will be offering beer geeks the opportunity to sample specialty batches of local nano and micro brews at the 2nd annual small batch: bug thirst beer tasting. The beer tasting supports small batch brewers while raising funds for a rotating cast of local charities. Saturday, Feb 11, 12 – 4 p.m. 580 Brannan St @ 5th. $20 donation for event taster glass & 10 taste tickets; extra taste tickets are available in groups of 5 for $10. Tickets available here and at the door.
