Takashi Murakami's Jellyfish Eyes

The first live-action film from internationally prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami is finally making a stop in San Francisco. Jellyfish Eyes – set in a post-Fukushima world – tells the story of Masashi, a young boy who moves to the Japanese countryside in the wake of disaster, and the "monster" he encounters and befriends (see above). The film combines Murakami's trademark anime-style aesthetic with broader themes of social change, self-empowerment, and hope.

What better way to spend Memorial Weekend than with delicious food, great music, and dancing under the redwoods? The Volunteer Firemen's BBQ is an annual, festive fundraiser for the Muir Beach Volunteer Fire Department – who will be tending the grills and serving up barbeque chicken as well as vegetarian tamale lunches all day. There will also be live music, raffle prizes, and a play zone for the kiddies.

November Project in Alamo Square

Looking for a fun new way to get in shape for summer? Show up at Alamo Square on Wednesday and Friday mornings to run hills and staircases around the city, meet new people, and sweat your face off. Started by two college friends in Boston who were struggling to stay in shape through the New England winters, the November Project is a free workout space you really should take advantage of – no signups, no fees.

Every Wednesday and Friday at 6:30 a.m.
