Joe Goode's Traveling Light

High above our heads, a society matron in a cascading purple dress trills about her life of privilege. Across the hall, a woman in a tightly cinched mechanical bustle glides through a ballroom reminiscing about her halcyon summer affair. In the foggy courtyard, a poverty-stricken man limps toward wealth while dancers cling to window frames behind him (and the audience clings to rough blankets draped over the seats).

The Former 48 Hour Magazine Gets A Media Award & A Lawsuit

The excitement surrounding the launch of 48 Hour Magazine back in April was palpable in the local media scene. An attempt to turn the publishing process on its head by giving contributors 24 hours from concept to deadline, the magazine is truly a brave experiment in the way media is made, packaged and sold.

Is it Inappropriate to Throw a Bachelor Party for Your Second Marriage?

My girlfriend and I recently got engaged, and all my guy friends—especially the married ones with kids—are talking about throwing me a bachelor party in Vegas. This is my second marriage, and I feel like it’s inappropriate to throw a (second) big bachelor party. What do you think?

The Week’s Hottest Events: MGMT, Summer & The Symphony Finale with Chris Noth (aka Mr. Big) and the Miniature Tigers

Comedy: Maria Bamford

The hilarious Maria Bamford, whose Black Friday ads for Target made our entire Thanksgiving weekend last year, will take the stage at Punch Line Comedy Club on Tuesday. Known for her self-depracating comedy, we’re confident saying she’s one of the most creative comics working today. Don’t be discouraged by the SOLD OUT warnings on LiveNation—work it on Craigslist or get yourself to the venue early. We bet you’ll find a way in.

Late Night with Conan: A Three-Hour Long Drinking Session with the Comedic Star

Bearded, buoyant and borderline belligerent, an awesomely inebriated Conan O'Brien, flanked by two of his equally sloshed comedic buddies Patton Oswalt and Andy Richter, offered up nuggets of sage advice and spontaneous comedic gems to Herbst Theatre's audience on Saturday. The theatre was packed to the gills with staunch members of Team Coco celebrating the 9th Annual SF Sketchfest.

Joanna Newsom on Harps, Elves and her SF Faves

Joanna Newsom is a serious musician. Don't reference elves and otherworldly creatures or draw comparisons to fairytales—she hates that. She prefers, instead, to pontificate on “patterns of syllabic emphases” and “the emotional landscape of songs,” and rightly so. The indie sensation known for her quirky demeanor, deft composition, intensely literary lyrics and mastery of the harp has perfected the art of marrying classical and contemporary in the most unexpected of ways. Don't mistake her music for the folk-psych chantings of Bonnie (Prince) Billy or Devendra Banhart. Newsom is vastly singular, as evidenced in Have One on Me, her newest 125-minute, three-CD magnum opus of poetry in motion. Here, she puts aside her harp for a few moments to enlighten us on self and song.

Tomorrow Night's To Do List: Hayes Valley Farm Film Festival

Folks, the second Hayes Valley Farm Film Night is going down tomorrow night, these misty July nights be damned. Bring a blanket, a few sweaters, some thick socks and maybe a flask of whiskey to keep yourself warm, because tomorrow night's film is a good one. It's the Botany of Desire, a documentary based on beloved Bay Area foodie-intellectual Michael Pollan's book of the same name about four plants (apples, marijuana, potatoes and tulips) and how they influence mankind.
