Take a trip across cultural boundaries. Curated by Lumina Arts' Katya Min, this new, month-long exhibit at SOMArts features the multi-disciplinary works of 20 Bay Area artists exploring their own experiences with cultural diaspora.

Sounds complicated, right? Consider this: a baby crib filled with coffee beans suspended from the ceiling as a metaphor for the artist's childhood in Central and South America. This work, like many others in the show, investigates themes of personal transference, geographies or origin, and places of arrival through experimental installations. From large-scale sculptures and multimedia installations to works in fabric, metal, oil, and acrylic and readymade objects, you'll gain insight into the artists' pasts and their paths to self-discovery.

If this piques your interest, head to SOMArts for Saturday's opening reception, which includes a very special performance by local artists Sasha Baskina in collaboration with Theo Knox and Lily Taylor. Their piece, Birds of a Feather, ponders love and migration through music and movement accompanied by spoken word by Sri Lankan poet Pireeni Sundaralingam and accompaniment by Irish violinist Colm Ó Riain. Intelligent, edgy, and poignant—you won't be disappointed.

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 5, 6 - 9 p.m.
Exhibition Dates: Saturday, March 5 - Thursday, March 31
Details: SOMArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St., 415-863-1414
