SF, Meet America: David Lynch's Interview Project

By

On June 1, David Lynch—whose work has confounded and disturbed us for decades—unveiled a new project, exclusively online. More The Straight Story than Eraserhead, Interview Project is a 121-part series of stunning 3-5 minute documentaries, with a new episode posted every three days through June 2010. Each episode features an interview with a random American encountered along the 20,000 mile route of an American road trip.

Starting in Needles, California, the documentary team of Jason S. and Austin Lynch (David's son) drove across the country and back, finding strangers willing to share their life stories and answer questions like, "What are your plans for the future?" and "How would you like to be remembered?" Some interviews are funny, some heart-wrenching, but all are touching and beautifully constructed glimpses of American life. As Lynch puts it in the intro video (posted below), "What I hope people get out of interview project is a chance to meet these people. It's something that's human and you can't stay away from it." Episode 6 went up today, so kick back with a cup of Lynch's Signature Cup (seriously, he's selling coffee) and catch up on the episodes you've missed. This is quite possibly the best thing on the Internet right now.
