Welcome to our new, weekly 'Ask a Trainer from the SF SPCA' feature on 7x7.com. They'll help you get your dog or cat into shape and ready for the world. Ask your own questions in the comments!

Q: My dog Jack doesn't seem to know when I'm calling him. How do I teach my dog to respond his name?

A: Name recall is one of the most important building blocks in your dog's training retinue. Here's how to teach your dog his/her name. Start in a distraction-free environment. Place a dog treat in each hand. Show the dog treat #1. Toss the dog treat #1 and while he's eating, repeat his name. As soon as the dog returns to you, reward with treat #2 closer to you. As your dog progresses, repeat these steps in more challenging environments.
