It's a rare (and beautiful) thing when a blossoming fashion designer opts to move from NYC to San Francisco, but such is the case with Lia Kes. The Israeli designer who spent the last nine years in Manhattan evolving her brand from a t-shirt line to a signature collection adored by the likes of Kate Hudson and Chelsea Clinton, just opened her first retail boutique on Saturday in Cow Hollow. Kes told SF Indie Fashion that she's inspired by the sophisticated casualness of San Francisco which is apparent in the flattering drapery that you'll find in her Fillmore St. shop, often balanced with masculine staples that give it an effortless edge.
Betsey Johnson made a highly anticipated appearance at her Union Square store just in time for the holidays. The eclectic designer was in town to introduce her latest collection and mingle with her biggest fans amidst prom dresses, cupcakes and pink champagne.
’Tis the season of the holiday party, and regardless of whether you're out for an evening with co-workers or friends, you can be sure the room will be filled with (often overly) festive cocktail ensembles. This year, instead of blending in to the sea of red, green and blue, we decided to opt for the ever-classic LBD paired with edgy accessories that are sure to light up the room. And since we're pinching pennies to spend on loved ones, everything's under $80.
1. Forever 21 Pamela Pleated Sheen Dress, $29.80
It's no secret that we can't get enough of Lady Gaga's over-the-top ensembles, so we were beyond thrilled to find out that her Monster Ball tour is coming to our fair city this weekend. If you're amongst the lucky ones who snagged tickets before they inevitably sold out, congratualations, this look is for you. But if you, like us, procrastinated and will instead be dancing around your room with a homemade disco stick to "Bad Romance" (which by the way, is impossible to get out of your head), you can still take inspiration from the Gaga herself for a night on the town with this week's look:
1. Funktional Cage Dress, $140
An online treasure trove for all things handmade and vintage, Etsy is one of our top go-to sources when we want to break away from our fast fashion fixes and and opt for something unique but still inexpensive. After scouring SF's Etsy Local shop for this month's holiday gift round-up, we wanted to share what's impatiently waiting in our shopping cart:
1. Vintage Inspired Cherries Apron and Pasties Set by tiffytart, $42: Put on a private burlesque show while the cookies are baking (i.e. every man's fantasy) in this pin-up inspired set.
Barcelino celebrated the Grand Opening of their latest store at Four Embarcadero Center on Thursday, December 3 with a champagne reception and an informal fashion presentation. The impressive 10,000 sq. foot space showcases hand-tailored Italian suits and sportswear for men alongside luxurious cocktail dresses and evening gowns for women.
Making the time to shop at local boutiques (especially those across town) can often be like giving to charity: we'd love to do it more often than it actually happens. That's why we were beyond thrilled to find out that you can now shop Presidio Heights-based Philanthropist online. We've admired them for quite some time now, as they donate 100% of the profits they make from selling designer wares to Bay Area charities which is, well, basically unheard of. And just when you thought it couldn't possibly get any better, they offer same day delivery within San Francisco, meaning you can wait until the last minute to find a hoiday party frock.
Let the guilt-free shopping spree begin!
Now that we're on the hunt for the perfect gifts for everyone on our list, there's no better time for there to be a weekend chock-full of events showcasing SF's best and brightest designers. We plan on starting out at Lightbox: The Hoilday Crafty Hour where unique gifts will be mostly under $50, perfect for people (like us) shopping for creative types on a serious budget. After taking a quick break to refresh, it's on to Chillin', a night of local fashion, art, music and live performance at Mezzanine.
Add some flare to your manicure just in time for the holidays at the Minx Nails Kickoff Party this evening. After sweeping through Hollywood on the nails of Miss Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Beyonce and Victoria Beckham, these heat-activated nail decals are now available in SF exclusively at ZaZa Nail Spa.
Make an appointment for Friday between 5-8 p.m. and get half off Minx applications with the founders on hand to chat about what makes their product so buzzworthy. Oh, and did we mention there will be complimentary cockails and snacks courtesy of ZaZa's neighbor Nova Bar?
We'll see you there.
With Thanksgiving behind us, it's officially time to start gearing up for the next round of holidays. Sure there are trees, lights and ice rinks aplenty, but nothing seems to get us in the spirit of the season quite like the cleverly decorated store windows popping up around town. And while it's impossible to choose a favorite (besides, of course, the adorable puppies and kittens up for adoption in the Macy's windows--just look for the crowd of ooh-and-awwers gathered around), we wanted to showcase the windows that made us do a double take:
