Local Filmmaker Pays Homage to Sound Geniuses

Brad Pitt would just be a beautiful silent hunk of meat if it weren't for folks like Ren Kylce, Michael Semanick, and Ben Burtt. These three golden ears and others in the field of sound for film have brought the silver screen to life for titles like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Lord of the Rings, and Star Wars. (You know, indie movies.) But you wouldn't know it because every year the Oscars quickly pass over the sound category in boring montages.

Three Items Tim Gunn Says You Must Have in SF

It seems Tim Gunn is determined to make over the Bay Area, one Westfield at a time. After stopping by Bloomingdale’s in SF last month to introduce Kate Spade’s latest offerings, the style guru hosted a Fall/Holiday fashion show on Nov. 7 as part of the Westfield Style Tour in Santa Clara. The 200 fortunate fashionistas who attended the event were shown how to maximize their wardrobes by mixing and matching new pieces with closet staples. Check out what Mr. Gunn had to say about fashion faux pas and must haves. For more information about the Westfield Style Tour, visit Modelinia.com.

Jordan Catalano, Vampire Weekend, Muse to Play Live 105's NSSN 2009

Not So Silent Night, the annual holiday concert brought to you by the golden ears at Live 105 is a gift you don't have to feel guilty opening early. This year's extravaganza at the Oracle Arena on December 11th features Muse (England's reigning prog rock champs), AFI (get out the mascara), 30 Seconds to Mars (Jordan Catalano's–err Jared Leto's–emo rock band), Ivy League hipsters Vampire Weekend, and Canada's Metric, fronted by the smoking hot Emily Haines.

Woody Harrelson Being Scary and Awesome

Woody Harrelson plays the Natural Born Killer role well. Especially when we asked him to talk into the microphone. We're sorry Woody! (Don't kill us). On a more serious note, we got a couple of questions with him about his new film, The Messenger, (out 11/13) on his recent visit to San Francisco.

No Cigars for Michael Jordan

No stogies for cigar aficionado Michael Jordan at Harding Park this weekend. His Airness, an honary assistant to Fred Couples (HUH?) has been told that cigars are not allowed on the course during the President's Cup. But we're guesing the $100 fine isn't going to deter the greatest basketball player on the planet. Peanuts, peanuts.

Get the S--- Scared Out of You at the Castro Theater

Get ready to curl up in the fetal position. This Thursday at midnight, the Castro Theater is hosting a free screening of the film Paranormal Activity, a ghost-filled spook-a-rama in the vein of the Blair Witch Project.  Nothing like a good midnight fright-flick to get the adrenaline pumping. Just think of it as a primer for Halloween.  RSVP here for entry.  Muhahaha!

Shaq is a Fan of The Lovemakers?

How Shaq came to know the Oakland band The Lovemakers is a mystery to us. Nonetheless the 7'1 new addition to the Cleveland Cavaliers (and prolific twitterer) gave a shout out to the sexy group in a recent tweet:

"The group Lovemakes there first single Love is Dead u. It just dropped people need to ck it out" -The Real Shaq

While a stamp of approval from Shaq isn't like being in Oprah's Book Club, it certainly makes us want to hear more from the band's new album Let's Be Friends.

Check out the video for "Love Is Dead" or download the single for FREE this week on iTunes:

M.I.A. Not So Into Opening for Tenacious D

M.I.A is apparently not so much a fan of Jack Black.  Read her recent tweets about Outside Lands' decision to replace the Beatie Boys with Tenacioud D (via The Owl Mag).

"CANT BELIEVE THEY REPLACED BEASTIES WITH TENACIOUS D ?????????????????????? AND IF I PULL OUT THEY SUE! SO REALLY? TENACIOUS D AFTER ME?...YOUR ALL WELCOME ON STAGE FROM THE GET GO, FUCK IT! IM TAKIN BIRD FLU OUT OF THE SET ! JUS TO MAKE A POINT!"
