With the death of San Francisco–based Jim Marshall in March of this year, so ended the career of one of the most influential music photojournalists of the 21st century. His final book, Pocket Cash (Chronicle Books), completed shortly before his death, is an arresting visual history of musical legends Johnny and June Carter Cash, with both rarely seen and iconic images taken between the mid- ’60s and mid-’70s. Marshall photographed the Cash family for more than 30 years, cultivating an intimacy that is reflected in these personal images.
Ferragosto at Piccino
If we were spending August in Italy, we'd be celebrating ferragosto, a short holiday when Italians traditionally decamp to the beach. Alas.You may not be able to jet off to Positano, but you can get in the spirit by attending the ferragosto party at Piccino on August 15. They'll be a pig roast and thin-crust pizzas and, in the Italian tradition, the wine will be free flowing. No reservations are necessary.
Tomato Dinner at Macy's
With all the street food over the last year, I recognize that the saturation point may be nearing. However, I must make a shameless plug for the second annual San Francisco Street Food Festival on August 21. Just as last year, I've again collaborated with my friends at La Cocina to help plan the festival, with my main role being to convince my favorite restaurants (including Pizzeria Delfina, Aziza, Flour + Water and many, many, more) to join us for the one-day feeding frenzy. They will all be there. Will you? For those who attended last year and got caught in the melee, please rest assured that the footprint of this year's festival is substantially larger, with over double the number of vendors, and instead of one bar, there will be three, manned by some of the best in the business—bartenders from Rye, the Alembic and Beretta. I'll be blogging about this again, giving you my best tips and picks, but for now, save the date. Best of all, admission is free—you pay only for the vittles and beverages at each stand.
A Slow Food Catalan Feast at Contigo
Break bread with fellow Slow Food enthusiasts at the “Convivial Dinner” at Contigo on August 3. DJs and Street Food
If you want to get your fix of both beats and beets, head to the “Dirty Dishes” event on July 22nd at the Lookout. The event will feature DJs and food carts, including Seoul on Wheels, Toasty Melts and Cookie Wag SF. The party begins at 9 p.m. and continues until the wee hours. Admission is $3—RSVP here.
I am a carbohydrate freak—noodles, rice, dumplings, you name it. But it’s char siu bao—barbecued pork buns—that I am really addicted to. I might need an intervention. I get them twice a week, two or three dozen at a time to bring to my staff at the restaurant. But while I’m driving back, I eat one, then two, then before I know it I’ve eaten six: chomp, chomp, chomp. I like both steamed and baked, but I usually get the pork-filled steamed ones. At Clement Street Bakery, they’re 80 cents apiece. The dim sum there is also pretty good, and their coconut buns? Oh, god.
