Economical Gift Ideas from the Curiosity Shoppe, Scandinavian Details and Frette

It seems that everyone is trying to scale back this holiday season, but that doesn't mean gifts have to go to the wayside. Make something, donate, or check out our picks for inexpensive finds for any holiday budget...

Underground Bazaar in Inner Sunset

Usually you don't go to someone's house to make a purchase, unless it's Tupperware or something seedy. But on Sunday you can find a whole slew of handcrafted goods for sale at a big, turn-of-the-century house on the corner of 6th and Irving. Why? It's the location for Underground Bazaar, a craft fair only featuring vendors whose work is made by hand. The event is both indoor and outdoor, admission is free, and the N will drop you off right at the corner, so there's really no excuse not to go... unless you are in fact looking for something seedy. In that case, take it down to Haight, you. For more information, click here.

Mission Holiday Block Party

Perhaps no other San Francisco neighborhood masters the balance of high and low like the Mission (think bacon wrapped hot dogs versus dinner at Range, thrift store furniture finds versus Mid-Century masterpieces at Monument), but rarely do you see high for low... anywhere in the city, for that matter. This Friday, however, some of the Mission's finer merchants will be bucking the norm with late-night sales and deals on everything from home decor to clothes to drinks (yes, please). There will also be a number of door prizes, live entertainment, and complementary snackies at locations throughout the area.

GLAAD Benefit at Bimma Loft and ID Home

Scoot over to Potrero Hill this weekend for cocktails and sales at not one but two (!) fabulous home decor spots.

Storeroom Holiday Shop Pops Up in the Fillmore

Important notice for procrastinators everywhere: There's officially no excuse to buy a lame present this year. Starting today and for the remainder of the holiday season, the good folks from CITIZEN:citizen have put together a pop-up department store in the Upper Fillmore, offering chic fashion and quality design goods at warehouse prices.

CB2 and Creativity Explored Team Up for Benefit

This is an exciting pairing: the recently opened CB2 in Union Square will be hosting a benefit for Mission staple Creativity Explored this Thursday, December 11th. The event will feature six window seat chairs up for auction that have been decorated and painted by artists from the organization. Plus, 10% of all proceeds from purchases that night will go to Creativity Explored and their mission to enable adults with developmental disabilities to express themselves through art.

Winter Wonderland in Lower Haight

'Tis the season for drinking and buying it seems, as yet another neighborhood is rolling out the discounts and booze for a night of festive shopping. Lower Haight has some definite gems in the home decor department, such as Doe, Xapno and Mickey's Monkey so make sure to stop by for discounts and assorted revelry (also check out Doe's art opening for works by Chantal deFelice).

Sale at Chronicle Books

S.F.-based publisher Chronicle Books is known for its unique selection of titles and subject matter (cough, What's Your Poo Telling You, cough), but for the Architecture or Interior Design buff there are some particularly great gift ideas to be had. And now through December 5th you can enter promotional code FRIENDS at checkout to receive 35% off your purchase plus free shipping - not bad!

Pop-Up Department Store Opens in the Upper Fillmore

Important notice for procrastinators everywhere: there's officially no excuse to buy a lame present this year. Starting December 1st and for the remainder of the holiday season, the good folks from CITIZEN:citizen have put together a sort of pop-up department store in the Upper Fillmore, offering quality design goods at warehouse prices.

Hayes Valley Holiday Block Party

Design lovers of the city over are no doubt familiar with the choice home decor pickings over in Hayes Valley. From Propeller  to Plantation, there's a little something for everybody, from the "minimal modernist" to "over-the-top maximalist". But if your style tends to lean more towards the "cardboard-boxes-as-coffee-table recessionist", don't count the neighborhood out yet. Their annual Holiday Block Party is this Friday, and along with live entertainment there will be free food and drinks. And maybe a free box or two if you're lucky.
