Want to live in the city yet still enjoy the warm weather one typically associates with July? Of course you do; even the most seasoned S.F. veterans can’t help but feel shocked when the calendar's on summer but the look outside clearly shouts February. The solution: Bernal Heights. Tucked into a southern tip of S.F., on the warm side of Twin Peaks with a whole (Noe) valley in between as buffer for any wayward fog, this beacon of warmth is the place to go for your best chance at sun in the city. Sadly though, rent has steadily been climbing by leaps and bounds in this neighborhood for the past couple of years and shows no sign of slowing down soon. That’s why today’s Craigslist Deal is about as special as an 80º Saturday in July.
Wow, that is one shiny floor. I'd like to do a sock-clad slide, "Risky Business"-style, across that floor, or practice my moonwalk. You could catch a tan off the gleam! Obviously I'm a sucker for refinished hardwood floors, and who wouldn't be? They're quite pretty, and a good sign that an apartment is being properly maintained. That's a vote of confidence for this week's Craigslist Deal, a $1525 studio located at Carl and Willard.
$1500 in the city? That's a hard bargain to beat for a one bedroom, especially when it's as pretty as this. Located in what they're calling Bernal, but we might actually describe as Outer Mission, this week's Craigslist Deal is near a lot of conveniences (Safeway is only a few blocks away, and you're within walking distance of restaurants and shops in Glen Park, Noe, the Mission, and Cortland's main drag), plus you've got easy access to 280, buses on Mission, and are less than a ten minute walk to the 24th Street BART.
"Rustic chic" is a phrase that's gets batted around design blogs all the time, but it's a bit of an enigma to actually capture. Sure, it's easy enough to parcel out the meaning: You're looking for a blend of part earthy substance, part luxurious style. But it's the composition and balance of these two seemingly opposing characteristics that's the crucial part, and it can be a beast to get right.
My current apartment doesn't allow dogs, so in truth I've got no business trolling pet stores. But what can I say? I've been bit by the dog bug (not fleas, I promise) and am seriously pining for one of my own.
We're moving into prime Sunset-living time. The weather's warming up, the beach is a straight shot away, the park's within spitting distance, and, yes, there's bound to be a big blanket of fog that rolls in from time to time, but for the most part it's easy living. If you're looking for a little outdoor oasis in the middle of the city, the Sunset's the spot for you, and this week's Craigslist Deal is the perfect bull's-eye from which to man your summer.
Confusingly enough, OHIO Design is actually based out of San Francisco's Mission District, and has been for about 10 years. The local furniture company focuses on building quality pieces out of sustainable materials, resulting in chic, urban-rustic styles that have garnered much praise and many a follower–including yours truly. Most locals pride themselves on knowing the ins and outs of off-the-beaten-track SF. But in the quest for the newest, coolest, most underground spot, the city's more recognizable gems can end up woefully neglected. Like the New Yorker that's never been to the Statue of Liberty, many here haven't visited quintessential city icons since their days as, well, visitors. If such is the case for you, this week's Craigslist Deal will get you back in the thick of iconic SF in no time.
It may not officially change seasons until the 21st, but once the calendar hits June most everybody's already in a summer state of mind. Now if only the weather didn't feel like February (or November, or pretty much any month aside from September) around here. No matter how long we've been in the city, it's still a brutal shock every time June rolls around and you've still got to bust out a wool coat in the evening. Boost your odds of banishing said coat 'til winter by checking out this week's Craigslist Deal.
I'm always on the lookout for inexpensive apartments in Bernal Heights, but they're surprisingly elusive. Usually neighborhoods on the city's outskirts offer plenty of deal-worthy spaces, but apparently Bernal didn't get the memo. It must be that the neighborhood's many assets–cozy restaurants, a sprawling farmers market, proximity to the 101–are no longer a secret. So imagine my surprise when I came across this week's Craigslist Deal. It's a 1 bedroom located right on Cortland, the neighborhood's main drag–and it's only $1500, to boot.
