The amount of local design talent throughout California is truly vast, but opportunities to see these artists and their work up close and in person–as opposed to over the interwebs–are far harder to come by. That's why I was quick to RSVP for next week's Local by Design event here in San Francisco. What's Local by Design, you say? Read more
Bay Area boutique Candystore Collective has a knack for innovative in-store installations. Their original location in the Mission incorporated one of the first uses of Woolly Pockets I'd ever seen–and the result is a lovely verdant facade greeting passersby on an otherwise plantless strip of 16th Street. At Hello, their new fashion outpost in Pac Heights, customers get another design treat–this time courtesy of artist Christopher Bettig.
Want to instantly up your home's appraisal value by, oh, say half a million? If you live in San Francisco, you can start by crossing your fingers that famed London graffiti artist Banksy is eyeing your exterior walls to use as his canvas at this very moment. The notoriously reclusive talent seems to have hit up the City by the Bay, with new artwork in his signature style cropping up on buildings all over town. Of course speculating about the value added to a building from a genuine Banksy kind of misses the point of the art (satirized to brilliant effect in the piece above) , as a confessed real estate geek I simply couldn't help myself.
Sometimes I just can't be bothered with moving outside of a 5 block radius from my home–and by "sometimes" I mean pretty much all of the time. I like to blame it on MUNI's hatefulness (a great defense as you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn't concur), but really it's just that my current 'hood has all it takes to keep me happy, and moving my bum for anything more sounds like effort better put towards Jenga championships, Mad Men marathons, and other matters of great import.
In this town, there's a new bar or restaurant opening every week. And just as often, I'm left wondering who designed the space, guessing at their inspiration, and wishing I could pick the designer's brain. Well, no more. Drinks by Design has happily solved this dilemma with their monthly happy hour. Read more...
Considering how much I love, love, love my mom, my usual Mother's Day effort–a card, occassionally handmade, with a few quickly jotted down lines of love–is not quite conveying my soaring adoration. But this year I'm resolved to Do. It. Up. I'll stop at nothing less than a deeply considered gift, beautiful card, and a note that pulls a few heart strings and incites a chuckle or, better yet, a full-on belly laugh. That mom's not going to know what hit her. If you're also planning to make this year's Mother's Day a show stopper, a customizable family pillow from K Studio could be your ticket to glory.
While I've been dying to get a dog for years, a part of me feels like city pups get the short end of the (fetching) stick. Being stuck in an apartment for most of the day then let out only to walk around a concrete jungle trying to find the tiniest swatch of green to pee on–it just doesn't seem too fair. But the location of this week's pet-friendly Craigslist Deal could make me change my tune.
Who hasn't daydreamed of escaping to Paris? You'd spend your days strolling the cobbled streets, stopping here and there for a croissant or a romantic tête à tête, then return in the evening to your grand, crumbling old flat over the Rue de Something-or-other for a bottle of wine. Well if you've yet to accrue enough frequent flyer miles to start living the Rive Gauche life, we might have the next best thing. This week's Craigslist deal has all the trappings of that Parisian flat of your dreams-minus the crumbling part, as luck would have it.
Living within walking distance of work is a dream for many, but with rent prices in our City's center continuously climbing skywards, it can be a hard one to realize. Yet with a lot of luck and many hours spent searching, you might be able to score discount digs downtown. That, or you can just check out this week's Craigslist deal.
