Shu Uemura may be the go-to beauty destination for lush lash applications, but the Japanese cosmetics brand is attempting to edge into Benefit’s brow grooming territory with the recent launch of its Tokyo Brow Bar at Shu Uemura boutiques across the country. While several of the boutiques have rolled out in-store wax and tweeze services, SF’s Fillmore Street store still awaits the green light on its aesthetics licensing (we’re told to stay tuned for the full services to arrive by late summer). I just returned from judging entries for the St. Vincent de Paul Society’s “Discarded to Divine” fashion show fundraiser and went through 110 items in less than a couple hours. It’s a dizzying and fun experience taking in the array of women’s eveningwear, accessories, children’s wear and men’s wear ranging from on-trend and wearable to over-the-top Burning Man fabulous.

Dressed in a body-con strapless black mini-dress, wide waist-cinching belt and plenty of chunky gold jewelry, Grammy-Award winning musician Estelle delivered a hot set on stage last night in front of a jam-packed crowd at San Francisco's Mezzanine. The Brit-born diva chopped it up with the crowd between numbers, dished about her ex boyfriend and danced hip-to-hip with fans she brought up to the stage for a high-energy performance that felt playful and personal.
Ladies in red were the star of the annual SF fashion parade, otherwise known as the “Paint the Town Red” gala hosted by the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter on Feb. 28 at City Hall. Co-chaired by gadabouts Roberta Economidis and Kelly Bryson Murphy, the sophisticated soiree, which raised $300,000, featured a live auction, three-course sit-down dinner (courtesy of McCall Associates), dessert buffets and dancing. Among the 450 guests, local fashion designers Cari Borja, Stephanie Verrieres and Kimie Sako turned out to support the cause, donating gowns they designed for the pre-dinner silent auction.
SF scenesters turned out en masse for the Louis Vuitton: A Tribute to Stephen Sprouse event at the Louis Vuitton Maison Union Square on February 24 where invited guests sipped cocktails and grazed on hors’ doeuvres while snatching up pieces from the brand’s graffiti and roses limited-edition collection. A reinterpretation of Sprouse’s original Day-Glo graffiti-tagged designs from 2001, the revised collection of clothing and accessories launched in select stores on January 9 to the glee of many Louis Vuitton collectors. Ten percent of the evening’s sales went toward supporting SF’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
Since last we featured women’s wear designer Sara Shepherd as part of 7x7’s esteemed Style Council in 2008, the local talent has been busy teaching fashion design and pattern making and sewing part-time at the Academy of Art and producing her gorgeous Spring/Summer 2009 collection. If you’re lucky, you may have already gotten a sneak peek of her latest concoctions at Global Green’s annual Gorgeous and Green benefit, where she previewed some of her impeccably tailored pieces on the SF catwalk.
The rumors have been swirling, but we’ve confirmed that Dylan, the Vintage 415 owned co-ed boutique in the Marina, has closed. Callers may still get a voicemail message at the location that connotes business as usual, but as of today, the e-tail arm of the Dylan website has shut down—sans any official going-out-of-business sale—and the homepage announces: “The boutique at 2146 Chestnut Street is closed. … Please check back for updates in the coming weeks.” Those updates could end up being that the Vintage guys are selling the store to new owners, but that’s still TBA, according to partner Nate Valentine.
