Koos van den Akker Sets Up Shop at the Academy of Art University

San Francisco may not be the city that most designers call home, but it’s definitely a go-to getaway for fashion-y types of all kinds during their summer globetrotting. Some breeze through town long enough to make the obligatory department store personal appearance and a round or two of high society party hopping. Others, such as New York sportswear designer Koos van den Akker, hole up for three months for 12 hours a day in a classroom at the Academy of Art University sewing clothes for his Madison Avenue boutique while imparting decades of industry wisdom to collegiate designers in the making.

Maria Galland: Quite Possibly the Perfect Do-it-All Mascara

I’m not usually one to promote shelling out the big bucks on mascara. With the huge range of options available at the drugstore (not to mention the tiny amount of product you actually get), you can pretty much find what you need at a quarter of the department store prices.

Shoe Shopping with Adam Moon

Yesterday I had the chance to sit down with Adam Moon, fashion director for women’s accessories at Macy’s, who dished on everything from his obsession with white Converse sneakers to his airline travel must-reads (US Weekly, People, anyone?). I was interviewing the Noe Valley resident for our annual Style Council feature (look out for him and seven other local style makers profiled in our September fashion issue), and as an added bonus the two of us took a stroll afterward through the department store’s massive women’s shoe floor so he could give me the first-hand scoop on the must-have styles for fall.

Goldenbleu Summer Sale

What could possibly be so important that we’d be willing to drive down to the South Bay on a weekday? It could only be the Goldenbleu Summer Blow-out Sale, where you’ll find up-to-date spring and summer items by one of our favorite San Francisco accessory lines. We suggest channeling good thoughts of pretty patent bags, brightly-hued shoes (and tasty cocktails) awaiting you at the end of your hour-long ride to downtown San Jose. Trust us, you’ll come away with more than a few new additions for your summer wardrobe to make it worth the commute!

Richard Nicoll for Thomas Pink Collection

Thomas Pink isn’t exactly the first label that comes to mind when I think of on-trend women’s wear. Impeccably tailored shirts, yes. But silky shifts and flirty frocks? Not so much. The Brit design house synonymous with men’s fashion is taking a stab at changing that image with the launch of the Richard Nicoll for Thomas Pink Collection next month—a nine-piece capsule collection by the rising London designer and Central Saint Martins grad who was dubbed Best Young Designer at the Elle 2008 Style Awards during February's London Fashion Week.

In Good Hands

Friends and co-workers are always asking me for tips on where to go for the best beauty services around town, from waxing and facials to manis and pedis, and I’m always happy to offer up the fruits of my daily research. With summer here, and plenty of San Franciscans trading in their boots for open toed options, we’ll tackle the basics of nail care. There’s a nail shop around every corner in this city, but how do you know if these places are any good? After all, a mani-pedi seems so harmless—a little cuticle nipping here, a coat of polish there. How dangerous could it really be?

Beckham-Mania

As if it weren’t hot enough in San Francisco, David Beckham turned up the temperatures in Union Square on Wednesday when he rolled through town to unveil his latest—and may we say greatest—fall ad campaign for Emporio Armani Underwear. The Los Angeles Galaxy soccer star kept the anxious crowd waiting for nearly an hour before he showed up to say a few very brief words of thanks, and then sign autographs for his adoring, squealing fans—many of them sporting a version of Beckham’s number 23 jersey.

Lash-tastic

Complimentary false lash applications at Shu Uemura SF

Like most women, I’ve come to think of false lashes as a special occasion beauty indulgence. I’ll squeeze in an application at a cosmetic counter a few times a year for, say, the ballet opening or the opera gala to achieve that camera-ready, extra diva-ish look. But after noticing how truly fabulous a girlfriend of mine always appears ever since she got semi-permanent lash extensions—whether she’s dressed in sweats or a cocktail dress—I just knew I had to change my inconsistent lash lengthening ways.
