7 Things in Food
By Sarah Sung on January 21, 2008 7:56 PM
Check out these 7 things—all happening this week.
1. Green delivery: This is the first full week that Grub Hub—online delivery guide and ordering service—is purchasing carbon offsets for every delivery.
2. Dine like it’s 1998: In celebration of 10 years in business, Absinthe is rolling back prices on signature dishes and cocktails from January 20 to February 1.
3. Go ‘shroomin’: Black Truffle dinner at Palmetto is tonight (January 22 at 7 p.m.). Start with beef carpaccio and shaved celery salad, move to pasta, then roasted guinea hen and finally a duet of desserts.

Food From Cloned Animals Seems Safe, a Panel Finds—there’s an unsettling headline if I've ever seen one. What's reassuring about a panel saying something as off the wall as eating food sourced from clones "seems safe"? I think I’ll pass.

The Before and After
By Sarah Sung on January 14, 2008 3:54 PM
I like to track progress. That’s why I’m a fan of before-and-after shots. Here’s one for Waterbar:
First you see the sketch of the light fixture in the rendering from my visit in October (read more about it here)…

… and voila! Here it is—all blown glass and wire.

Stay tuned. Waterbar’s opening date is slated for January 29.

Semi-Homemade Chicken
By Sarah Sung on January 11, 2008 4:50 PM
I haven’t yet been able to sit through an entire episode of Sandra Lee’s Semi-Homemade show on the Food Network. There’s something about it that gets under my skin. I’m sure she’s a great person with homemaking skills I’ll never have, but where’s her edge? Why does every show involve frilly cupcake frosting? Does she not have one gram of badass Bourdain in her at all? Well, I digress.
Saturday’s Fruit Orgy
By Sarah Sung on January 07, 2008 5:46 PM
Seeing how much I love a good bowl of cereal (A Five-Bowl Meal), you’d think I’d have been to Kate’s Kitchen a bunch of times, but the truth is that I hadn’t eaten at this Lower Haight joint until just last week. And now, I plan on bringing this spot into my regular brunch rotation.

The Year Ahead
By Sarah Sung on January 04, 2008 4:22 PM

I don’t really make New Year’s resolutions, but I’m a huge fan of to-visit lists. (I keep a running tally of all the restaurants I want to eat at with me at all times.) Here’s a list of 7 openings that I’m keeping on my radar:
1. Star chefs take on the locavores: Former Fifth Floor chefs Charlie Kleinman and Jake Des Voignes take over Fish and Farm.
2. A jolt of java comes to Mint Plaza: Blue Bottle Cafe is projected to open this month (January).
Christmas Cheer
By Sarah Sung on December 21, 2007 1:35 PM
Eating out is one of my favorite things to do, except on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day—that’s when I’ll actually make my way to the kitchen. While reading Four-Star Feasts, I couldn’t help thinking that while the menus of these acclaimed chefs sounds good (I’m definitely clipping the Cajun shrimp recipe), my family’s traditional meal—turkey, dressing (most call it stuffing), sherry sweet potatoes, sesame spinach and a few other dishes that change according to my mood each year—is equally deserving of the four-star feast title. I do the veggies and my mom takes care of the turkey. So, I’m off to cook and eat.
7 Memorable Meals of ’07
By Sarah Sung on December 20, 2007 6:02 PM
After a year of what felt like non-stop eating, I thought I’d reduce my many (many) meals into a concise list of the seven most memorable. As you’ll see, some are old standbys while others couldn’t be duplicated—at least not without considerable effort.
Here goes, my year in review:

The uni was so fresh, it was still moving.

Beignets at Brenda’s
By Sarah Sung on December 20, 2007 5:16 PM
Last Wednesday morning was rainy to say the least, but a winter deluge wouldn’t stop this online team from trekking to the Tenderloin for our holiday breakfast. That’s right, we dined in the Tenderloin—but no need for pity here—there’s a little gem of a spot known as Brenda’s French Soul Food on Polk between Eddy and Turk.
