Bar Jules Is Open

Just a few hours after my five-bowl meal, I headed over to Bar Jules—at Hayes and Laguna—next to Suppenkuche. I was curious about it after reading Eater SF’s paint report entitled Hayes Valley Quite Possibly Colorblind—funny.



Bar Jules just opened last week. It’s BYOB (for now), they don’t take ressies and there’s no sign out front, but that certainly didn’t deter the masses. Luckily, we beat the 7:30 p.m. rush and were seated immediately. Chef-owner Jessica Boncutter (Zuni and Hog Island) crafts a minimalist menu—which is displayed on two large chalkboards and changes daily (you can check it out every day on the website). Her approach showcases a commitment to support local small farmers and the sustainable production of meat and fish.



Since the menu’s variable and the space seats about 50 (my guess), the selection, while thoughtful, is small. There were about four starters, and two mains—we could choose between a rib-eye steak or seafood stew. We each opted for a hearty soup with fresh-picked Santa Barbara shelling beans and escarole and the meaty, fresh (albeit messy) seafood stew.

And you’ll be happy to note that the mustard, olive and turquoise colors on the walls work. They pop, making it a vibrant, yet cozy space all at once. Oh, and if I could vote for the coolest bathrooms category of the Reader’s Choice survey? Bar Jules might be in the top five. Go check it out!
