Clift Hotel Makes a Downtown Stay Worth Your While

By

Sometimes you don't even have to get out of town to get away. But San Francisco hotels often come with a lofty pricetag, which is precisely why it's important to cash in on a deal when you see it.

From now through April 30, receive a complimentary night with any two nights you book at the posh Clift Hotel or any of the other participating Morgans Group properties (LA, NYC, Miami, Las Vegas, Scottsdale, London). If you haven't yet crashed in San Francisco’s opulent turn-of-the-19th-century hotel, here's the chance you've been waiting for. A semi-recent renovation rendered the Clift the hippest, most trend-setting hotel in the city, and with the help of revered designer Philippe Starck, celebrity hotelier Ian Schrager has transformed this stately old gal into functional modern art.

Behold the lobby: hand-painted Italian plaster walls, Italian limestone floors, an 18-foot bronze fireplace mantel by French sculptor Gerard Garouste, a concierge desk by renowned 20th century French designer Jean Nouvel, and even a bronze-and-marble coffee table by Salvador Dali. The 375 guestrooms don't disappoint either: massive sleigh beds made from English sycamore perch on a polished chrome base, 400-threadcount Italian percale bedding provide for a sound night's sleep, oversized bathrooms with a dressing area and vanity table make it easy for primping, a state-of-the-art entertainment center provides a leisurely evening in, and enormous floor-to-ceiling mirrors indulge your vain side.

But it doesn't end there: The stodgy old Redwood Room cocktail lounge has evolved into a true masterpiece, where the city’s trendy delegation watches flat-screen TVs playing digital works by avant-garde digital artists; the same theme spills over into the hotel’s popular restaurant, Asia de Cuba. And it's the subtle accents and curiosities that make this fun hotel even more amusing: oversized chairs made for a giant (the perfect photo op), pictures that move, glowing red lighting, furniture with artistic elements like horns, mirrored tables that resemble jewelry boxes placed throughout the entire establishment.

If you have the extra dough to spend, spring for the lavish private apartment on the 14th floor, with original wood-paneled walls, an orange mirrored banquet table, a kitchenette, a large living room with white leather couches and a fireplace, two bathrooms, and a master bedroom. Other basic amenities for all guests include a 24-hour business center with computer workstations, 24-hour concierge service, a 24-hour gymnasium with private trainers and fitness classes, and all the requisite big-hotel services. You’ll appreciate the location as well--in the Theater District, a mere two blocks from Union Square.

The Clift Hotel is located at 495 Geary St. Visit the Morgans Group website to find out which days the special is valid. Blackout dates may apply, and rates are based on availability.
