Peek Inside the Apartment of the Curiosity Shoppe Owners

A creative couple gets all wrapped up in design.

	Lauren Smith and Derek Fagerstrom, shown in their Mission apartment, call this $200 teak table from Alameda Flea Market “our first piece of grown-up furniture.” That was then; this is now. The couple, who own the Curiosity Shoppe, co-authored the recently released book Wallpaper Projects (Chronicle).
	The custom cabinet by Berkeley furniture designer Thomas Wold is made from such found odds and ends as a fire extinguisher case, a child’s pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey game and a theater-marquee number. “Thomas is like a furniture-collage artist,” says Fagerstrom, a former projects editor at ReadyMade.
	The couple replaced all the light fixtures in their rental. “We didn’t want to live with a crappy, transitional look just because we’re renting,” says Fagerstrom, who “acquired” this colorful vintage ’70s lamp from ReadyMade when the magazine moved from its Berkeley headquarters last year.
	The original Ryan McGinness print, titled Fabricated Cultural Belief Systems, was a wedding gift from star designer and Top Design host Todd Oldham, Smith’s former employer and mentor of all things crafty. “He taught me how to crochet, knit and sew,” she says. “He’s a DIY king.”
	Wallpaper Projects shows how to stylishly cover everything from stair risers to archways. This door panel showcases a beautiful midnight-blue print by Ferm Living.“If you look in your house, you’ll recognize all these architectural details that are perfectly framed for a wallpaper accent,” says Smith.
