Dime-Sized Style

Nursery essentials are showing the clean lines of modern design. With baby gear like this, it’s time to think outside the pink-and-blue box.

  CHALK IT UP
The never-ending battle between your furniture and your toddler’s Crayolas ends with the Chalker Table ($125) from Modernseed. Created by Oakland’s Eric Pfeiffer, award-winning furniture designer and husband of Modernseed founder Melissa Pfeiffer, the table has clean lines and a functional chalkboard surface molded into curves that are perfect for drawing cars, hills and trees for hours. 4456 Piedmont Ave., Oakland, 510-547-4445, modernseed.com

OUT OF ORBIT
Who says strollers can’t be sexy? Navigate sidewalk jams in style with the Orbit Baby Transport System, ($899; here in mocha). This high-tech convertible, designed in the East Bay, features a removable car seat with a 360-degree rotation and a collapsible design that folds easily into the trunk. And it’s sleekly stylish to boot. Available at Giggle, 2110 Chestnut St., 415-440-9034 or orbitbaby.com

  RED-LETTER DAYS
Kids will love learning their ABCs with Oopsy Daisy’s “Animal Alphabet” poster ($114–$150)—and parents will love how it matches nearly any nursery color scheme. The colorful, whimsical characters are also perfect for playrooms and school-age kids’ bedrooms. Available at Jonathan Kaye Baby, 3548 Sacramento St., 415-563-0773, jonathankaye.com

BOOSTER SHOT
The booster seat is a throwback, for sure, but Boosty Yea!’s Booster Chair ($72) is popular for its subtly retro but practical design. Constructed of durable, easy-to-clean oilcloth, the seat is available in such colors and patterns as Diner Blue and Red Gingham—we love it in Hibiscus Red. Available at Dottie Doolittle, 3680 Sacramento St., 415-673-1334, dottiedoolittle.com

  TICKET TO RIDE
In a bike-obsessed city like SF, the Skuut wooden bike ($80) gives preschoolers the big-kid riding experience, as well as a leg up on the competition: Its design helps youngsters forgo the awkward “training wheel” period altogether. Created by Peter Emblad, local dad and ER doc, the European-style bike has no pedals. Developing strength and balance as they go, kids can walk, coast or scoot along before transitioning gracefully to a two-wheeler. Available at Crafty Kids, 3108 Fillmore St., 415-771-0570 or skuut.com

SWEET DREAMS
Sausalito-based design team Serena & Lily makes nurseries look like “after” versions of rooms on HGTV. A favorite among celebs, their linens are a sophisticated take on traditional baby bedding—like the clean-lined Aiden collection ($539) shown here. Available at Mill Valley Baby & Kids Co., 12 Miller Ave., Mill Valley, 415-389-1312
