Insider's guide to Valencia Street
There's more to the Mission than meets the eye.
Second-hand Prada, secret patios, world-class art: The bustling sidewalks of Valencia Street don't betray these insider tidbits, but we don't mind sharing.

Shhhh—don't tell anyone, but Spork has a great back patio, and on warm nights (have faith—spring will arrive before long), the staff plays 45s out there. Just don't tell them where you heard about it. 1058 Valencia St., 415-643-5000 |

Range makes a really good maple manhattan. It's not always on the cocktail menu, but if you ask for it (and ask nicely, of course), they'll make it. 842 Valencia St., 415-282-8283 |

Right now, two Valencia galleries are tied for the title of our favorite. Receiver Gallery (1415 Valencia St., at 25th, 415-550-7287) rarely misses the mark with its hipster-heavy, indie-chic shows, which often showcase local artists. Jack Hanley (395 Valencia St., 415-522-1623) is a small space, but it's huge on the Mission School—they'll include a Barry McGee, Chris Johanson or Tauba Auerbach piece in a group show faster than you can say “Beautiful Losers.” |

The people who curate Community Thrift's inventory say they've seen Prada shoes, Pucci slip dresses, Vivienne Westwood jackets and Chanel sunglasses pass through the donation station. While you're on the block, take a stroll down Clarion Alley, an open-air gallery with extraordinary contributions from local and international visiting artists. 623 Valencia St., 415-861-4910 |

Coffee preference is of course an intensely personal choice, but we've got to say that Four Barrel has way better art on its walls than many coffee houses. Don't miss the tasting bar made by local furniture designer Earl Gonzalez—and look for the story about him in the March/April issue of California Home+Design. 375 Valencia St., 415-252-0800 |

What with the (deserved) fame of Pizzeria Delfina and Little Star, we've all been taking Pauline's for granted. You can't argue with those great crusts, inspired topping combinations and the terrific house wines. 260 Valencia St., 415-552-2050 |

The Freewheel Bike Shop has a very knowledgeable and helpful staff, who can fix whatever ails your bike—whether it's a stolen seat, missing wheel or just a flat—if not the same day, then within 48 hours. 914 Valencia St., 415-643-9213
