The Party Girls

Donuts dance night creators Alison Childs and Kat Matutina conceived of their event as more than a "fun place to dance."

It’s their party, and they’ll serve fried favors if they want to. And they do. The creators of the monthly dance night Donuts, 33-year-old Alison Childs (left, an artist who creates live video projections for the occasions) and 26-year-old Kat Matutina (right, aka DJ Pickpocket), conceived of their event as much more than “a fun place to dance”—though it’s that too. “It’s a venue where independent bands, visual artists and fashion designers collaborate to bring something new to SF’s nightlife,” says Matutina. As the name suggests, that “something new” also comes with doughnuts (organic vegan ones, of course). Having successfully integrated every manner of nightlife into one disco-infused evening at the Knockout (theknockoutsf.com), the pair was happy to dish about other artistically nourishing forms of entertainment.

Mi Ami is a newer local band consisting of [two guys named] Damon and Daniel. They are probably the cutest band in SF right now.”

Dead Channels’ Sleazy Sundays is a road show–style movie screening held at the Victoria Theater. Three rare psychotronic classic grindhouse films (from the ’50s to the ’90s) are screened from original filmstock.”

GA GA is a club night that happens the first Saturday of each month at 222 Hyde. The space is cozy, the DJ booth is on the dance floor and the DJs always play the best in classic disco/Italo with some house/electro.”

Eggs is a club night at
Mighty put on by local DJ and musician Safety Scissors. It has a similar goal to Donuts in regards to challenging people through overstimulation, mixing lots of music styles with nonmusical things too—such as drag performances!”

Projektor is a monthly event [set up by Childs and Lauren Robertson] during which rare concert footage, experimental films and horror movies are screened while DJs play records before and after. The movies are great, there’s plenty of popcorn and it’s free.”
