Red Box Sushi
Outside-the-box sushi.

A virtual shoebox of a space, this sushi joint is part of a growing cadre of restaurants that are lighting up the ’Loin with good food. Despite its modest prices, Red Box features a slick interior, complete with sci-fi-geek-cool movies projected silently on the back wall. The sushi chef doubles as a waiter, taking orders and running back to create them. And when the sushi arrives, it’s well executed.
It seems every table is demolishing a plate of the firecracker balls, pictured here (spicy tuna rolled in panko, deep-fried and served with a kicky sauce). The nigiri menu is the most fun: Try the red-box roll (filled with hamachi and wrapped in salmon) or a salmon and salmon-skin roll that’s a perfect combination of crisp and rich. The menu offers a short list of cold sakes, but, after your meal, we’d suggest heading across the street to Bambuddha Lounge for an endless choice of potent nightcaps.
