Writer and futurist David Pescovitz is that rarest of dot-com species: a survivor. There at the birth of the Internet (working at then-startup Wired in 1993), Pescovitz is still going strong in the Web 2.0 world as coeditor of BoingBoing.net, the mega-popular technology, culture and art blog that lures millions of readers each month, and editor-at-large for MAKE:, a magazine for DIY technophiles. As research director at the Institute for the Future, a Palo Alto–based think tank, the 36-year-old Pescovitz is also looking toward the Next Big Thing, what’s being called the “geo-web.” “Rather than a place you go to on a computer screen, the Internet will become an overlay on top of our physical reality,” he says. “You’ll be walking through Chinatown while your mobile is showing you user reviews of the restaurant you’re passing.” Even though he still exists in real time, reading actual books and hanging out with his wife, fashion designer Kelly Sparks, and their year-old son Lux in Bernal Heights, we definitely believe him.
