The Armory Goes from Kink HQ to San Francisco's Newest Music Venue

It's time to trade in your whips and chains for concert tickets and overpriced G&Ts.

Standing tall at Mission and 14th Streets since 1912, The Armory is no stranger to change. Once used as a National Guard facility, the massive brick building even served as one of the sets for the Millennium Falcon spaceship in Star Wars, before becoming the headquarters for adult film industry site Kink.com in 2006.

A growing list of state and local health regulations on adult films and websites, however, has Kink.com owner Peter Acworth seeking a wider use for his $14.5 million dollar investment.

Along with new office spaces on the second and third floors, there are plans to convert the 40,000-square-foot Drill Court into a live music venue early next year.

Audrey Joseph, former president of the San Francisco Entertainment Commission, is directing the renovations for the 4,000-capacity new music venue.

“It’s large enough to accommodate a well-known touring band or DJ but intimate enough where everyone can see the stage,” she told SF Gate. “There’s not a bad view from anywhere in the room.”

Joseph has helped establish notable music venues and nightclubs in San Francisco, including The Mezzanine and the shuttered Club Townsend. Already in talks with concert promoters LiveNation and Goldenvoice, Joseph hopes to give bigger music venues like Bill Graham and The Masonic some hearty competition.
