Colorful 1990s Mission on Display at Oakland Museum

Ever wonder what the Mission was like circa 1990, B.T. (Before Tartine)? This month, the Oakland Museum of California is hosting “Mission Scene Moment,” a show that transports us back in time to experience the vibrant community’s music and art of the day (read: pre-gentrification).

Playing a significant role in the show is the interconnectedness between the era’s emerging creatives—think Barry McGee, couple Chris Johanson and Johanna Jackson, and Ruby Neri, among them. These artists have tapped their personal collections to share works from their contemporaries, such as Scott Hewicker’s canvas, The Nearest Faraway Place, on loan from Johanson and Jackson’s private stash.

“The painting has a loopy energy that is reminiscent of the Mission District, past and present,” says OMCA curator René de Guzman.

Expect live music, libations, and noted artists and musicians from back in the day.

Exhibition is this Friday, March 6 at the Oakland Museum of California1000 Oak Street.
