Dave Pell's NextDraft Brings Bite-Sized News to Your Phone

By

We're really enjoying Dave Pell's NextDraft. For example, regarding Deflate-gate, which will be looked upon as sports journalism's dumbest moment of all time, Dave Pell says, "[Y]ou've got a story we can all joke about on social media at a time when we're desperate to be torn from our usual digitally driven, politically motivated, self-righteous silos of homogeneity." Which would explain why my Twitter and Facebook feeds are insufferable as of late.

Noted for being an Angel investor in companies like GrubHub, Marin Software, HotelTonight, Automatic, and Liftopia, Pell's newsletter is a must for those who like bite-sized nuggets of information on today's most popular topics. From TSA and firearms to Obama's SOTU and how Paper mag prepared its site for Kim Kardashian's glorious derriere, it's a great read.

"NextDraft has been around for a couple of years," says Pell. "It's always been my favorite thing to do on the web. I had a similar newsletter I did a decade ago, but a friend suggested that I bring it back. I was worried that people wouldn't want one more news source in the age of Twitter and never-ending news streams."

Best of all, his newsletter is personality driven—i.e., no buzzwords needed to catch algorithms. "It's really a modern day column with links, broken down into a list of ten quick items." In the words of Phil Bronstein, chair for the Center for Investigative Reporting, "Think of Dave Pell as the Internet’s managing editor. The NYT meets SNL. Smart, funny, essential."
