Iconic Local Artist Rex Ray Dies at 59

Today, Rex Ray officially left the building.

Which means that San Francisco has one less crazy talented, quick witted, super soulful being to call its own. I had the privilege of interviewing Rex several times over the last decade; our conversations happened mostly on the orange Togo sofas at his loft in the old Allied Box Factory. I was always struck by his candor, his ability to tell a great story (like when emails from David Bowie, for whom Rex designed album covers, would get tangled in his spam filter), and his offbeat taste (Futurama wind-up figures co-existed with Warren Platner vintage furniture in his home). Ray's vibrance was most evident in his whimsical, colorful, and utterly mesmerizing collages.

I’d like to think that right now he’s standing at the front of the line for his favorite honey lavender ice cream at that big Bi-Rite Creamery in the sky.
