Noted beacon of female empowerment Kim Kardashian West is coming to Oakland to speak about, among other things, the objectification of women. Well, naturally. The Commonwealth Club of California will host Kardashian at an Inforum event on June 30, to be held at the Paramount Theater.
Kim and hubby Kanye have made memorable visits to the Bay Area of late: First, there was that totally subtle, not at all over-the-top proposal on the sacred grounds of AT&T Park; then, a warm welcome at their $20,000 courtside seats for a Warriors game at Oracle Arena. But Kim's upcoming jaunt into the realm of Bay Area academia might be her most compelling visit yet.
SFist reports that Kim's talk at Commonwealth will include topics such as "her famous family, the business of millennial culture, the objectification of women in media and more." And to be fair, Kardashian is an expert in all these subjects. Famous family? Check. Making millions off millenials? Check check. Most coveted object of media objectification? Oh yeah.
And certainly the best-selling author of Selfish (a tome dedicated to the reality star's perfected genre of "selfie photography"), who has quite willingly made a media object of herself as a reality star who has posed naked and seriously shiny (and more power to her) must have a lot to say about the objectification of women in media. But we have to wonder, whose side will she take, the objectifiee's or the objectifier's? Because let's be honest, Kim's entire "career," and her place in the famous people pantheon, relies upon the objectification of women, and of people really, in a society crazed by can't-look-away reality television.
But we're not judging. We intend to give Kim the benefit of the doubt, and will hear for ourselves at her lecture(?) on June 30. Who knows, she may be passing out little pearls of wisdom.
Tickets went on sale today, and run from $53 to a mere $336 for the full VIP Party experience.
