Never-Before-Seen Andy Warhol Originals Pop up on Cuvaison Wines

By

Cuvaison, a winery owned by the Schmidheiny family of Switzerland, is well known for its premiere vineyard estates in both the Carneros and Mount Veeder appellations of Napa Valley. But did you know the winery is also related to Pop Art royalty?

The Schmidheiny family has a long history of supporting international and acclaimed artists, including Andy Warhol, who, in the early 1980s, was commissioned by Alexander Tai Schmidheiny to create artwork for a Cuvaison wine label. The result: More than 50 screen prints, in Warhol's signature style, depicting grapes in stunning patterns and unique colors. Many of the works have been maintained in Cuvaison's archives but have never been shared with the public—until now.

Cuvaison and The Andy Warhol Foundation, a not-for-profit leading funder of contemporary art, have long discussed bringing this one-of-a-kind body of work to light, for wine lovers and to Warhol fans alike to enjoy. Now, 35 years later, they have collaborated to create three Andy Warhol by Cuvaison Collections, beginning with the 2016 release of two wines featuring labels with artwork from the 1980s commission and to be followed by releases in 2017 and 2018.

Artwork for each wine label in the new collection was hand-selected by Cuvaison in collaboration with The Andy Warhol Foundation and the Schmidheiny family. Each collector's box will include two wines, a 2014 Chardonnay from Carneros and a 2014 red Bordeaux blend from Mt. Veeder, exclusively sourced from the best fruit of these two distinct vineyards.

To celebrate the launch of the collection, Cuvaison will showcase the original Warhol artwork, via Christie's New York, at the winery's tasting room. The collection will be open for public viewing by reservation.

Each collector's box set ($250) will have limited availability at retail locations and direct from the winery. Wine and Warhol lovers alike can have early access to each box set through the Cuvaison wine club, as well as through exclusive retail partnerships in the USA and select international markets.
