Dance for the Thinkers

InkBoat’s Line Between

InkBoat tends to shift between the stages and streets of New York, Berlin, and Tokyo, but San Francisco gets this world premiere. Line Between is a physical exploration of the space between waking and sleeping from this inventive dance theater cadre. Influences include Korean shamanism, conversations with neuroscientists, and detailed pondering about why celebrities get so much air time in our dream worlds.

December 2-4. ODC Theater, 3153 17th Street. Tickets are $17-30 at odctheater.org.

Hover Space by Stacey Printz Dance

Performed on a stage suspended from the ceiling, Stacey Printz’s Hover Dance is ambitious and possibly limb-threatening. The stage can rise and fall and tilt at sharp angles and the twelve contemporary dance vignettes play in the vertical challenge. Printz gives the dancers a new way to use space and maybe defy a little gravity.

Through December 3. Theater Artaud, 450 Florida Street. Tickets are $22-25 at brownpapertickets.com.

Pina Bausch's Danzon

Consider yourself geographically fortunate because legendary choreographer Pina Bausch’s Danzon is touring the world and Berkeley is its only stop in the U.S. An uninterrupted hour and a half of startling vignettes, Danzon will imprint its images on your brain like sharpie on cotton. Physical, intimate, and popping with humor, the dancers move to music from jazz to Mexican pop to Mahler.

December 2-3. Zellerbach Hall, Bancroft Way at Telegraph Ave., Berkeley. Tickets are $30-86 at (510) 642-9988 or calperformances.org.
