Drink Here Now: Tequila, Taxes, y El Techo


There's no reason to let tax season bring you down when there are so many uplifting drinking options this week.

The Tax Man Cocktail

Burritt Room + Tavern Bar Manager Josh Trabulsi is making tax season a little less taxing by offering a special drink all month. The Tax Man combines gin, thyme liqueur, aperol, strawberry, lemon, and seltzer for a bright, seasonal cocktail that will help take the edge off taxes. Named for nearby Burritt Alley, where detective Sam Spade's partner Miles Archer was gunned down in The Maltese Falcon, Burritt Room serves prohibition-style craft cocktails with a film noir feel. If the Tax Man isn't your type, you'll find a host of other classic and new cocktails to choose from. Spice things up with the Poquito Picante, featuring tequila blanco, aperol, lime, and Burritt serrano tincture. Or keep your cool with the Pimm's Napoletana, a mixture of Pimm’s #1, gin, tomato, cucumber, and strawberry. Burritt Room is open seven days a week, starting at 5:00 p.m. The bar closes at midnight on school nights, but you can drink until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. 417 Stockton Street, in the Mystic Hotel.

Flights + Bites on Tax Day

Whether you're looking to celebrate the on-time filing of your taxes, or to drown your tax sorrows in alcohol, Berlinetta Lounge will be ready to serve you on April 15, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Not far from Burritt Room, on the lobby level of the Mystic Hotel, you'll find the "Flights + Bites" event in Berlinetta Lounge. Chef Luke Knox's menu features first of the season produce, including Smoked Salmon with artichoke and tomato sauce, and Fiddlehead Fern Hummus with fried chickpeas. Each of the six courses are paired with a Banshee Wine, whose co-founder, Steve Graf, will be on hand for the evening. Ticket prices are less than taxing, at only $25 per person for six wines and six dishes. Tax Day + Tequila Tuesday = a Trip to Sausalito

Tax day falls on Tequila Tuesday this year, and Copita Tequileria y Comida in Sausalito is celebrating with Agave Girls, part of its ongoing Tequila Tuesdays series. Agave Girls is an educational tasting event hosted by PBS chef and Copita co-owner Joanne Weir, who is the author of Tequila: A Guide to Types, Flights, Cocktails, and Bites. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. on April 15 with passed appetizers and a tasting flight of Clase Azul Tequila. A four-course dinner follows, prepared by Chef Gonzalo Rivera. Dinner courses include: Puerto Nuevo Lobster Tacos, 'Xek' Yucatan Citrus Salad, Enchiladas Negras made with duck thigh confit, and Mango Nicuatole for dessert. The tequila flight covers four cocktails, starting with La Pinta Sangrita with La Pinta tequila, grapefruit juice, elderflower liqueur and sparkling rose wine. The Lemon Basil Margarita rounds out the evening, with Clase Azul Plata tequila, Cointreau, lemon and lime juice, and basil. Mirror Mirror on Tap at Southside Spirit House

Deschutes Brewery from Bend, Oregon has been named brewery of the month at Southside Spirit House, which means locals will have access to some of our northern neighbor's best brews during April. You'll find River Ale and Inversion IPA on tap all month long, plus Obsidian Stout in the bottle, and maybe even some Fresh Squeezed IPA. This Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., you can meet one of the brewers from Deschutes and taste the brewery's famous Mirror Mirror, a limited edition barleywine that was born of a double batch of Mirror Pond Pale Ale and last released in 2009 and 2005. If you can't make it to the brewer's event this week, they'll be hosting another one on April 24. 575 Howard Street

New Cocktails at Lolinda

With close to two years under its belt, Lolinda seems to be hitting its stride. The Argentinian Steakhouse with a rooftop bar recently introduced two new cocktails and a handful of new beers. The Last Word is an approachable, refreshing and boozy cocktail, made with gin, lime, green chartreuse, and maraschino. The Alice Mine borders on the savory and is made with aged aquavit, dolin rouge, scotch, and celery and orange bitters. New brew additions include Speakeasy Payback Porter, Almanac Sourdough Wild Ale, Weihenstphaner Hefe Weissbier, Steelhead Extra Pale Ale by Mad River, and Magnolia's Proving Ground IPA on draft. If two floors of drinking and dining aren't enough, take the elevator to the roof, aka "El Techo." There, you'll find the brand new Palmetto cocktail, which is a basically a Manhattan made with aged Venezuelan rum instead of whiskey. 2518 Mission Street
