Three Reasons to Cross the Bay Bridge

Three Reasons to Cross the Bay Bridge

Now that it’s officially summer, the hot days have disappeared, naturally. Despite the lack of sun, summery fun can still be had throughout the Bay this weekend, particularly in the East Bay where not only is the Alameda County Fair kicking off its 100th year, but the food scene is heating up and various smaller summertime celebrations are beginning as well.

Foodie Fun Forget Napa, Berkeley has its own great little winery (who knew?), and this weekend the Donkey & Goat Winery is hosting its Summer Solstice celebration. The winery will be offering free tastings (they’re usually $10), and will have Pizza Politana on hand to sell their coveted wood-fired pizzas. Elsewhere in the East Bay, the much-anticipated Hopscotch restaurant opened last weekend in the Uptown. So far the Japanese-American bistro is living up to the hype, thanks in no small part to its bar, stocked with craft beers and small-batch spirits, including some particularly great and hard-to-find scotches. Also in the Uptown area, recently opened Donut Savant continues to win over hipsters and normals alike with its small (think donut hole size), affordable (about 50 cents each) and delicious treats. Early favorites include an outstanding apple fritter, salted maple, and chocolate bombs. Note: Owner/chef Laurel Davis makes her donuts in small batches throughout the day, so while you can’t expect a fully stocked pastry case, you can look forward to the awesome smell of baking donuts all day long.

Pinball Wizards The Pacific Pinball Museum, in Alameda, is always worth a visit—you can play 85 different machines an unlimited number of times for the price of admission ($15 for adults, $7.50 for kids). Now there’s even more reason to ferry over to Alameda: Running through July 6th the fascinating Adventures in the Development of Pinball exhibit reveals the physics, mechanics, and electronics behind the game.

Sail the BayThe 12th annual Summer Sailstice is this weekend. The event is celebrated in ports all over the globe; here in the East Bay, Sailstice means free sailboat rides and boat tours for all. Don’t miss it! Until you make a wealthy friend, this might be your only shot to sail the Bay this summer.
