The Eat and Drink List: This Week's Top 7 Events

What the Cluck
Oh San Franciscans, how you love your DIY. If you’re already raising bees, canning tomatoes and brewing your own beer, but feel ready to take it to the next level, you may find inspiration in Slow Food SF’s screening of Mad City Chickens, a film about, well, chickens in the city. Catch the movie on August 8 at the Delancey Street Theater ($15), then start planning your flock (you can legally keep up to four chickens—no roosters—in your SF backyard).

Pig In the City
The following night, August 9, continue your urban farming obsession by talking with Novella Carpenter. Her recent book, Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, tells the story of how she transformed a vacant lot alongside her home in Oakland into a flourishing farm, complete with vegetables, pig and chickens. The event runs from 3 to 4 p.m. and is free.

Cacao From Bean to Bar
Chocolate and milk, anyone? On Thursday, August 6, 18 Reasons is hosting Aaron Foster of Taza Chocolates, who will talk about the transformation of cacao from bean to bar. Join in the discussion and tasting of Taza cocoa nibs and bars, paired with farm-fresh milk. Tickets are $10.

Shake It Don’t Break It

Scott Beattie (formerly the bartender at Cyrus) and Lou Bustamante (of Hangar One/St. George Spirits) are teaming up on August 14 for a hands-on cocktail class in the CUESA kitchen at the Ferry Building—the perfect venue for the type of ingredient-driven farm fresh cocktails this duo favors. Your $40 ticket entitles you to two cocktails and as much bar knowledge as you can stand. To purchase, click here

A Grand Feastival

This weekend the inaugural SF Chefs.Food.Wine kicks off, the first culinary festival of this scope to ever be held in our fair city (Really? Yes, hard to believe, but really). The action-packed schedule of events includes dinners, panels and classes of all kinds, chef demonstrations, urban barbecues and wine tastings—and more! Check out the full schedule (and purchase tickets) here.
