Beer and Brats

By

We spend a lot of time here talking about what’s new and exciting (“hot,” I guess, is what the kids call it), following trends, and making sure we tell you all about what’s happening, food-wise, in our fair city. But it’s a sad day when new opening trumps old favorite, so we felt it was time to pay homage in our blog to an important category of restaurant: the oldie but goodie (OBG). These OBG’s may well become a regular part of our blog, and they’re also the spots where you’re likely to find the 7x7 editors on any given night. Got an OBG you want to tell us about? Leave a comment and let us know.

This week: WALZWERK

It’s hard to say what I like best about Walzwerk. The massive steins of beer go a long way towards influencing me, but I’m also deeply in love with the grilled bratwurst with sauerkraut and spatzle and the Thürlinger salad, a sprightly array of green and red cabbage and carrot salads, the cabbage brightened with vinegar, the carrot sweetened with cubes of apple.  Let’s not forget the décor, especially the kitschy German paraphernalia lovingly displayed throughout the otherwise prison-like rooms. Best of all, dinner at this OBG is affordable—pitchers of good beer ring in at $10, and that bratwurst platter I was telling you about? A cool $14 for three times as much food as you should eat in one sitting. Word to the wise, though: Do everyone a favor and go on a weeknight.
