The Best Bloody Marys in San Francisco

By

When it comes to brunch cocktails, there's no denying that the Bloody Mary reigns supreme. Spicy, salty, and tomato-y, nothing says hangover cure quite like this boozy drink. We rounded up the must-try Bloody Marys around San Francisco, and they definitely won't disappoint.

Ironside West Coast BBQ

Sundays mean an all-you-can-drink, DIY Bloody Mary bar at this BBQ joint in SoMa. Bacon, olives, peppers, limes—all the fixins' you could want—are up for grabs. 680A 2nd St.

Zeitgeist

It'd be a crime to talk about San Francisco Bloody Marys without giving Zeitgeist a shout-out. This bloody is the perfect balance of spicy, smooth, and strong, with a generous amount of vegetables to balance it out, and is best enjoyed outside on the biergarten patio. 199 Valencia St.

Elite Cafe

This New Orleans-inspired cafe has earned Bloody Mary notoriety for their three-level version of this classic: made with standard, jalapeno, or habanero vodka. Choose your poison—they're all delicious. 2049 Fillmore St.

St. Regis Hotel

The Bloody Mary is the official cocktail of the St. Regis. If you order the orginal, the Red Snapper, you will know why. The San Francisco branch's menu also offers a special version called the Golden Gate Mary, which opts for Don Pilar Añejo Tequila instead of the original's Belvedere Vodka. 125 3rd St.

Harvey's

Forget having only one Bloody Mary on the menu, this Castro watering hole has EIGHT. All named for famous Marys, they're serving up everything from the pepper-infused vodka Bloody Mary Lou Retton, to the citrusy Bloody Mary Tyler More, to the tequila-splashed Bloody Mary Montez. We love them all. 500 Castro St.

Zuni Cafe

Zuni Cafe's Balsamic Bloody Mary has earned a well-deserved spot on virtually every roundup of San Francisco Bloody Marys—and once you try it, it's crystal clear why. True to its name, the balsamic vinegar adds a sweet and tangy kick. 1658 Market St.

Universal Cafe

Head to the Mission for Universal Cafe's delicious take on the Bloody Mary, made with sake instead of vodka. Inherently smoother than a classic version, you're going to need to remember to drink these slow—they're dangerous. 2814 19th St.

Elixir

Take matters into your own hands with Elixir's notorious DIY Bloody Mary bar, and choose between three kinds of juice, 17 hot sauces, numerous spices and peppers, and all the essential vegetable fixings. Play mad scientist with the wide array of ingredients, or keep it classic and pair your half-full pint glass of vodka with Clamato and celery. 3200 16th St.

Park Tavern

This classic American tavern in North Beach not only serves up a killer Bloody Mary complete with worcestershire sauce, horseradish, and Tabasco, but also an equally-good Michelada, which consists of lemonade, house-made hot sauce, and pickeled jalapenos. 1652 Stockton St.

Foreign Cinema

The Persian Bloody Mary makes it clear from the get-go that you won't find a typical mix stocked at this restaurant. Additions of curry and balsamic vinegar make this a standout on the list. 2534 Mission St.

Nopa

Head to Alamo Square's Nopa for a three-way customizable Bloody Mary, where patrons pick their poison: vodka, scotch, or mezcal. 560 Divisadero St.

Thieves Tavern

The BLT Bloody Mary is aptly named—the perfectly spicy mix comes with a high-rise garnish of bacon, lettuce, and tomatoes. 496 14th St.

Maven

This Lower Haight hideaway's brunch menu is to die for—especially when it comes to the cocktails. Basil, balsamic, and house pickles add some flair to this spot's version of the classic. 598 Haight St.

Twenty Five Lusk

This hip SoMa restaurant is perhaps an unlikely home to one of the city's best Bloody Marys. But the Lusk Bloody Mary is a stunner—made with vodka, roasted tomatoes, lemon, roasted garlic, thai chili paste, aged balsamic, and accompanied by a sampler garnish plate. 25 Lusk St.
