Christmas Countdown: Gifts for the Butcher Girl
The thirst for blood is a draw during the holidays: While the tweens (and their moms) are swooning over New Moon, the lady foodies are finding the butchers mighty fine (Ryan Farr! Ryan Farr!). For that special woman in your life, there is no end to Christmas present ideas.
1. The Read
Two female bloggers have both come out with books about a life entangled in raw meat and love. We leave it to you decide which one will strike the right cord: Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession by Julie Powell (of Julie & Julia fame) came out first, but come February, look for The Butcher & The Vegetarian: One Woman’s Romp Through a World of Men, Meat and Moral Crisis (available for pre-order on Amazon) by local writer and vegetarian-gone-carnivore Tara Austen Weaver .
2. The CSA
This Sunday, stop by Blue Bottle at 300 Webster Street in Oakland for the “Pork Prom”, hosted by Live Culture Co., Sonoma Direct and Blue Bottle Coffee. Not only can you have a cup of drip and some bacon, but you can order up your girlfriend some mighty fine, “lovingly raised” Mangalitsa, Ossabaw and Berkshires. Five pounds runs you $35. Click here to order in advance, which is recommended.
3. The Apron
Gotta have the apron.
4. The Class
These days, it seems every self-respecting foodie longs to ditch her IT desk job to spend their day breaking down cows. For that special person, give them the gift of an Avedano’s “Butchery for Adults” class (we’re hoping there’s no “Butchery for Kids”). The class is held the third Sunday of every month, $300 a person gets you knowledge and at least $100 worth of meat.
