On Friday at 6 pm, a gorgeous explosion of intricate costumes, music, candles, skulls and flowers will inhabit the Mission District for the annual Dia De Los Muertos procession. All of the joy and pain is offered up for those who have passed, and naturally, there are many edible and drinkable ways to pay your respects. Here's a rundown of the special events going on around the Bay Area, from The Mission to Sausalito to the East Bay.
La Victoria will be the stage for peripatetic chef Roger Feely of Soul Cocina, who is cooking a delicious-sounding six-course menu of handmade regional Mexican fall flavors. Think roasted pumpkin huaraches with mole verde, and a milk chocolate pot de creme with churros. The Friday night event will roll out in two seatings, and there is an entire menu alternative for vegans. More info and tickets here.
Good quality tequila distiller Espolon is hosting a Day of the Dead pub crawl through the Mission on Friday from 8 pm to midnight. The crawl makes three stops for tequila drink specials at Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem (2323 Mission Street), Doc's Clock and Elbo Room, where drinkers can get a paloma or a shot of tequila and a Mexican beer.
Tonight and tomorrow night, Comal in Berkeley is all decked out with two painted skulls in its windows, facing Shattuck Avenue. Inside, the space is strewn with sugar skulls, marigolds and photographic mementos from the staff, awaiting DJ Jose Ruiz to hit the turntables at 8 pm. Down a few margaritas and enjoy a free piece of sweet Pan de Muerto to soak it up on the way home.
Tonight at Copita in Sausalito, the restaurant will be decorated with marigolds and chalk drawings on the sidewalks outside, as Joanne Weir rolls out a special holiday menu. The meal will begin with a traditional ponche cocktail made with tequila, tamarind, cinnamon and more, followed by spit-roasted turkey and queso steamed in banana leaves. The full menu is written out here on Facebook.
