Drink Here Now: 5 Places to Sip This Week

1. Dobbs Bar Opens in Hayes Valley: Hayes Valley is pretty short on watering holes, which is why the folks behind nine-month-old restaurant Dobbs Ferry decided to transform what was originally planned as a private event space into a cozy neighborhood sports bar. Featuring six TVs, draft beers, and a menu of creative shots, the new spot is ideal for catching a fall football game. If you're feeling peckish, they also offer bar bites from the kitchen like chicken nuggets and burgers. (Monday-Thursday, 6 p.m-1:45 am, Friday, 4 pm-1:45 am, Saturday-Sunday, 10 am-1:45 am, 409 Gough St., Hayes Valley.)

2. Brews on the Bay: The SF Brewers' Guild's annual takeover of the SS Jeremiah O'Brien is this weekend, and as always, drinkers can expect plenty of cold beer and bay views. The organization has expanded significantly this year, welcoming new brick-and-mortar operations (Southern Pacific Brewing, MateVeza), nanobreweries (Almanac, Triple Voodoo, Pacific Brewing Laboratories), and even an older microbrewery with SF roots (Shmaltz Brewing), so they'll have even more delicious suds to choose from. Tickets are $50 and include unlimited tastes; if you're hungry, they'll also have food trucks on site selling their wares. (Saturday, September 15, 12-5 pm, at SS Jeremiah O'Brien, Pier 45, Fisherman's Wharf.)

3. From Ales to Fromage: Also on the beer front, Master Cicerone Rich Higgins (who left Social Kitchen & Brewery this year to start his own beer consultancy) is popping up with his own series of events, featuring beer expert Heather Castro. The first event, at Piccino, will pair three cheeses (two Italian, one French) and other accoutrements with an assortment of six farmhouse beers, with a discussion of different fermentation methods and strategies for pairing. Tickets are $45 and can be purchased here. (Wednesday, September 19, 5:30-7 pm, at Piccino, 1001 Minnesota St., Dogpatch.)

4. Piperade's 10th Anniversary Wine Dinner: Gerald Hirigoyen's Basque spot Piperade is turning 10 this week, and in honor of the occasion, they're hosting a feast that's paired with numerous wines from their own vineyard, Clos Pissarra, located in the Priorat region of Spain. Dishes will include king salmon, roasted squab, and grilled lamb chops, with two wines from the same year paired with many of the courses. The meal is $150, and reservations can be made by calling the restaurant at (415) 391-2555. (Thursday, September 13, 7 pm, at Piperade, 1015 Battery St., Financial District.)

5. Philanthro SF's White Party: We may be post-Labor Day, but there's no excuse not to throw on your favorite white outfit for Philanthro SF's third annual bash en blanc, which will benefit SF+Acumen, an organization that provides water, healthcare, energy, and housing to underprivileged people in South Asia and East Africa. Admission is $30 for regular attendees and $50 for VIP attendees; the latter includes a one-hour open bar. Drinks are $5, and Mama's Empanadas will offer up bites. After the party, Taverna Aventine will offer attendees $4 beers and $6 glasses of wine. (Saturday, September 15, 7-11 pm, at ING Direct Cafe, 101 Post St., Financial District.)
