The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market Celebrates 20 Years!

Shortcake by Fifth Floor's Pastry Chef Francis Ang

When the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market debuted in the spring of 1993, it was one of just three farmers markets in San Francisco, a city which now boasts more than 25 markets each week. Over the years, the market has served as a key link between the city and the local food producers, supporting numerous small businesses, farmers, chefs and food artisans.

On Saturday, May 18, CUESA celebrates 20 years of good food and friends at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market with a blow-out Birthday Bash in the south arcade of the Ferry Building. The party kicks off at 9 am with a stellar selection of seasonal shortcakes from pastry chefs Francis Ang of Fifth Floor Restaurant, Jen Musty of Batter Bakery, William Werner of Craftsman & Wolves and Luis Villavelazquez of Les Elements Patisserie.

Guests will also have a chance to get creative at the Make-Your Own Mimosa and Juice bar. We’ll have a selection of fresh squeezed market juices including Tangelo, grapefruit, fennel and strawberry to experiment with. There will also be coffee and tea, and everyone will leave with party favors. Tickets for the event will be available at the door or can be purchased in advance here.

In addition to the ticketed event, we’ll be celebrating the anniversary with free activities throughout the market. Stop by the CUESA Info Booth to take part in the treasure hunt, and join us in the south driveway at 11 am for a presentation by local luminaries.

The story of the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is the story of the farmers, food artisans, chefs, visionaries, shoppers and supporters who have helped to shape it over the years—and that includes you! Help us commemorate the market by sharing your reflections, memories and photos on the CUESA website.

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market has played a key role in the evolution of the Bay Area’s farm-to-table movement, and it remains a vital part of the local culinary community. This Saturday’s Birthday Bash is all about celebrating what an amazing community the market is, and we hope you will join us for the festivities.
