Foodie Agenda: A New Big Sur Eatery, Bayview Pop-ups and more
Here's our weekly list of all the things happening at the culinary moment in San Francisco. Treat your taste buds to one of these mouthwatering events.
We all know that Bayview, with its gritty industrial vibe, unreal city skyline views and ethnic food meccas, is on the up and up, so why not let the Candlestick Park-adjacent digs live up to their hype? Take a trip to check out the Bayview Mercantile at All Good Pizza, a pop-up market featuring Batter Bakery, and more excitingly, their new ice cream cart. Earl’s Bread and Brittle, Gratta Wines, and Comfort Foods National will all be hanging out as well. The afternoon will include a set by MadNoise. Pizza, bread, ice cream and music? We can’t think of a better Sunday. This Sunday 11 am-4 pm at 1605 Jerrold Avenue.
There is no higher honor in the restaurant world than winning a James Beard Award. Being the foodie-obsessed city we are, it’s no surprise that the Bay Area has its fair share of honorees. Tickets to the dinner section of the night are sadly sold out, but listen to the hour-panel and nosh on hors d’oeuvres at the Commonwealth Club. Bask in the glory of Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski of State Bird Provisions, Christopher Kostow of Restaurant at Meadowood, and Michael Mina, and then maybe beg them for a reservation. It’s no secret that San Franciscans have a ferry fetish. We think the ride’s a lot better if there’s a nice alcoholic beverage waiting on the other side. Try the After Ferry strawberry infused vodka mixed with mint, lime, and Chandon Brun Sparkling at the Farmshop Restaurant in Marin County Mart. The newly-opened-for-lunch restaurant serves drinks and new twists on classic Californian foodie fare (read: Coddled Eggs, Wise Sons Pastrami & Eggs). The best part? It’s steps away from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal. If that doesn't make your weekend trek to Marin completely deserved, we don't know what does. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 am-3 pm.
We thought we were dreaming when we heard someone say $20 for a prix-fixe dinner. Extra excitement occurred when we realized said dinner was at La Boulange, San Francisco’s French bakery-cum-bistro staple. The original bakery reopened on Pine Street and is offering a weekend Baker’s Dinner that includes an entrée (either roast salmon, pork loin, or chicken), side salad, bread, and dessert–all for that beautiful price. Served in that charmingly French style, we can’t say no. Twenty spots available on a first come, first serve basis. Friday through Sunday from 5:30-7:30 pm at 2325 Pine St.
It’s no exaggeration that the beautiful, mind-blowing stretch of Central Coast we call Big Sur hasn’t had a restaurant opening in a while. When we say a while, we mean over a decade–but fear not, the dry streak is over. Big Sur Roadhouse, a 110-person eatery opened about a week ago right off of Highway 1. Executive chef, Matt Glazer calls the restaurant “Coastal Cajun,” serving up everything our coast is famous for, including blackened Monterey Bay Wild King Salmon and a daily rotating gumbo infused with handmade Andouille sausage and seasonal Dungeness crab. Add the jaw-dropping drive down, and we've already got the keys in the ignition. Located at 47080 Highway 1 and open daily from 7:30 am-9 pm.
