Saturday, January 4

If Santa didn’t bring you that coveted beer maker for Christmas, never fear, the folks at WorkshopSF are letting you borrow theirs. Learn how to brew beer in this two-part class at one of their brewing rigs and you’ll walk away with a case of your very own ale. During the class you’ll munch malts and huff hops to achieve the flavor you want, as well as learn a great deal about production in commercial brewery and what the best equipment is for your home. $95, January 4: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and January 22: 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Get tickets here.

Sunday, January 5

Pastry Chef Francis Ang and his crew from Fifth Floor near Union Square are hosting a fundraiser to benefit the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The night includes delicious food, cocktails and a silent auction. All proceeds from the cocktail party will benefit Habitat for Humanity. $40, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. 12 4th Street @ Market. If you’re overwhelmed by the variety of whole grains at your market this is the class for you. The San Francisco Cooking School will teach you about all the different kinds of grains from quinoa to faro to barley, how to prepare them and delicious new ways to integrate them into your everyday cooking. Some of the recipes you’ll prepare in class are: Andean Style Quinoa Chowder, Farro and Mushroom Tart, Brown Rice and Kale Gratin with Creamy Cheddar, Toasted Barley Salad with Roasted Pepper and Grilled Portobellos, Polenta Crostini with Onion Jam, Classic Risotto Milanese, Moroccan Rice Pudding and Crunchy Chocolaye Rye Cookies. $150, 6:00 – 10:00 p.m. 690 Van Ness @ Turk. Hurry and get your tickets to the 2014 Bay Area Brew Fest before it’s too late. Dozens of breweries, hundreds of different kinds of beer, food trucks, djs, and a photobooth will all come together at the Fort Mason Center for your boozy entertainment.
