New Plant-Based Restaurant Opens in Berkeley 

Husband/wife duo Barry Horton and Jennifer of Local Love Catering, are replacing their vegan catering service with a new plant-based Berkeley restaurant, Sanctuary Bistro. After a successful Kickstarter campaign last year, the new resto will open Friday, August 1 with a special grand opening menu—a five-course prix fix including crab-less cakes served with a jalepeno kumquat gelee; Heirloom caprese salad; mixed mushroom duxelle in a house-made porcini pasta served in spinach cream sauce with braised carrot and zucchini slaw; southern tofu served with twice baked cashew potato; and bananas foster with a fresh strawberry coconut ice cream for dessert.

New Saturday Brunch + Oyster Happy Hour at Bar Agricole

Bar Agricole has a lot up their sleeve this week. They're extending their hours to include Saturday brunch beginning August 2, offering $6 sandos for lunch Tuesday-Friday, and hosting an oyster happy hour ($2 oysters, $6 cocktails) Tuesday-Saturday from 5-6 pm plus all day Sunday. New brunch offerings include: Poached eggs with pork belly, fried green tomatoes, and chili hollandaise; pork shoulder with grits, beans, olives, and tomato confit; and cedar plank king salmon with lentils, roasted peppers, eggplant, and mint.

Paella Monday at Camino 

Starting Monday, August 4, chef Russ Moore will bring back his weekly rotating variation of the traditional Valencian rice dish, prepared in the famed Camino fireplace and paired with starter, dessert, and an optional selection of wines. This Monday they're serving up: tomato and grilled roman squash salad with herb jam; paella cooked in the fireplace with squid, salted ling cod, fresh black eyed peas, cranberry beans, chiles, and cucumbers; and hazelnut meringue with blackberry sorbet, peaches, and whipped cream

Rick's Supper Club at Bocanova 

Owner/Chef Rick Hackett of Bocanova, is continuing his monthly Rick’s Supper Club themed dinners for August, September, and October 2014. On August 7, Bovanova goes "Creole Crazy” with familiar and lost recipes from New Orleans’ famous cuisine. The menu includes: charbroiled oysters with lemon, pepper, butter, romano cheese; caramelized duck liver; soft shell crab; shrimp Creole; maque choux rice; braised "Seven" Steak; Creole ratatouille; brabant potatoes; and Babas au Rhum for dessert.

Mason Opens on Portrero Hill 

The new Mason Restaurant from Chef Ryan Scott just opened on Potrero Hill showcasing chef's signature American pub food. Among the highlights of the debut menu are house cured olives with citrus and lavender; chips and dip with house made potato chips and crème fraîche-dill dipping sauce; avocado toast with brie, roasted garlic, and sea salt; crispy Brussels sprouts with Calabrian chili, charred lemon, and parmesan; gnocchi with sweet corn, pancetta, and uni; grilled scallops with cauliflower, smoked almonds, and serrano chili-citrus vinaigrette; and smoked short rib with potato purée, cress, pickled cherry tomatoes and horseradish. Other Mason highlights include a pizza oven, patio seating, and gourmet soft serve ice cream (plus floats with orange soda and porter beer).
